According to my very fallible recollection, BA recommends using goop on cam towers, but recommends not using it on the cylinder base gaskets for the reason you cite....potential for those cylinder base gaskets to slide around and out of position. Again, this recollection is part guess.

Hello
I also recoment to messure maximum lift while duration and mark it on the pulley. This is much easier to hit and you can check if you have problems with the cams or the dail in on the other side. Use your old tension lifters or a mechanical lifter to dail in and your cams are tourqued down. A other important step is to check the cam position reguarding to the intermediate shaft. This has to be done previous to the timing as you have to shim the position and this is better done before you have the chain on the gears. Also you can start to assemble the Oilcooler, Alternator with schroud and wireloom but as long your timing isn´t proper setet I wouldn´t start to get to the manifold parts. Btw are those checked for truieness at the flange and the plastic heat inserts for the injectors are tight ? Grüsse |
