I am pretty sure the 964 distributor rotates CW and depending on your year need CCW rotation. You would have to change the gear on your crank to turn the distributor CW.

One initial challenge is your crankshaft. The SC crank turns the SC distributor the opposite direction of the 964 distributor, due to the pitch of the distributor drive gear pressed onto the crank. That's why many choose to use the aftermarket 12 plug distributors and fire them with MSD 6AL units like JB Racing does

The crank drive is a simple swap of the brass gear. Pull the circlip and heat the brass gear and it slides right off. Replace with pre or post SC gear.
Thats the way the factory did the 3.0 Carrera is 76 and 77, ran the 3 post CD and points. Bruce |

I guess I should have been more clear on why I felt the distributor rotation is a big deal. If somebody just wants to twin plug w/out splitting the case, the 964 distributor is not going to work.
But the argument can certainly be made that if you're going to pull the heads off anyway to twin plug the engine, you might as well split the case and get into the crank as well. I agree it's no big deal to swap the gear. Just need to measure the gear thickness to make sure your new drive gear is are same dimension as the old one. If not, need to select a new circlip of appropriate thickness to hold the layshaft gear, distributor gear and thick spacer onto the crank "snout"

No problem the case is sitting in the garage the crank , rods , rockers and rt. cam are in Reno having the thing done.
From what I understand I need to set up the dist with an advance? Do a crank sensor for timing & have a ECU to make it work . I really need to understand What the whole process is .. Thanks again Dean |

I thought there was a way to cut up a 3L distr. to modify the 964 distr. - more than just a gear swap (??)
