Cam suggestions 3.0 mountain carver
I know this isn't the first time this, I've done a little research on here but want to throw out what I'm looking for.
Engine is an 79 big port 3.0, 40 Webers PMO short manifolds, heads are stock big ports, 10.5:1 95mm P&C that I already have (debating going 9.5:1 or 9.8:1 if I have to I do not want to go twin-plug due to the expense, this is a hot rod/stress reliever, not a race car) B&B 1-5/8 stainless headers with a sport exhaust, MSD ignition and a planned re-curve on the euro distributor. Trying to decide on a good cam. Car spends it's life in the mountains. It is a light weight canyon carver. Of course, reliability/drivability are key factors. I have a 7:31 915. I'm looking for power across the board but something that will be really snappy in the switch backs. I don't see much pass 3rd. I do a lot more autocross but would like to be able to have fun at a DE. So any suggestions for a cam? In Wayne's book he mentions the 3.0..webers, 10.1:1 and an early S cam. I want to keep it simple like that. Is an early S cam a good option still? Thanks! Miles

I'd go with e-cams. I built a very nice 2.7 w/9.5:1 JE's, SSi's, E-cams, 40mm webers, MSD/pertronix, etc.......great combo and one of the best street/canyon carver combos ever.
regards, Al

Were the E's more torquey? Is the early S cam still a good option for a broad range of power? Also, were all the 73 back S cams the same profile?

I just saw a cam chart somewhere in the engine rebuilding forum. It had all the different cams listed and their specs. I might have saved it but you should find it with some searching. I don't have Dougherty cams but John was super responsive and helpful with a few timing and compression ratio questions that I had. If I were to buy, I would get cams from him. Just my .002.
