OK on cold start the car will crank but not start unless I take the air regulator and hold it closed with my hand any suggestions? Or where do I start?

Are you talking about the air flow meter?

By holding it closed, do you mean pulling down on the sensor plate, pushing up, or stuffing your hand underneath to cover the air? Not really clear.

Okay, tell me if I understand you correctly.
Cold start, engine fires immediately but won't continue running. You push up on the sensor plate/plunger in the intake, and the car will start and run. Is this correct? If so, what you are doing by pushing up on the plunger is to activate the fuel pump (via its relay), pressurize the system, and shoot fuel out of the injectors. What that does is compensate for failed residual pressure, typically caused by (in order of likelihood) faulty fuel accumulator, faulty fuel pump check valve, faulty WUR, or faulty pressure relief valve in the fuel distributor. If I was correct in understanding your post, you will need a fuel gauge pressure set to check the residual pressure of your system.
