Yet another reason to buy an SC over a Carrera
I have been lurking here for quite some time because if all goes as planned, I will be buying a 911 SC or 1980's Carrera in the next few months.
Anyways, I thought I would call about insurance prices today, as I suspected rates might be high. I asked for a quote on a 1983 SC and a 1984 Carrera to see if there was any difference in price. I was shocked that there is almost a $300 (Canadian) difference. The annual cost of an SC would run approx $1200 and the Carrera approx $1500! I am so proud to live in British Columbia and be at the mercy of our government owned Gestapo insurance company known as ICBC. So come on SCWDP'ers - admit it - you have infiltrated ICBC and forced them to make the Carrera's more expensive. On a somewhat related note, anyone from Greater Vancouver able to recommend a good place to get an honest and thorough PPI done? |

Strugs,
There is a reputable independant mechanic in North Vancouver who has been working on Porsches for a number of years. Unfortunately I don't remember what his name was, but if you did want to find out, I should be able to.. unless someone else on the boards from Vancouver knows who it is. UrbanGarage (http://www.urbangarage.com) takes their Porsches to Burrard Autostrasse to have them checked out last time I asked them. Are you looking at a particular SC? Or just in general. I've been looking for the past 6 months, but haven't found one that has met my needs w/o being sold quickly (83-86, coupe, fairly priced) |

Or, to find out, call them and ask for John Rieken (the PO of my beautiful SC).

You guys think you have problems! Try finding a decent SC or Carrera Coupe in Alberta.... if you have any leads anywhere in Western Canada please let me know. The pickings are mighty slim.

In the past few months, I have only looked at a few SC's and Carrera's, as I am not currently in a position to purchase. At the end of October, I WILL be in just such a position, so the real hunt will start then. I am not expecting to find my ideal 911 right away, though. I just hope I can be as patient as you are. If you can find the name of the guy in N Van I would appreciate it. Thx.

I'd suggest you (or your friend) take these concerns up with Duncan personally. Then tell us the other side of the story.

Rick,
Last year was a banner year in Alberta for Porsche! I was looking for almost two years before I found mine, and I checked out about 12. I would consider a trade for the same shape coupe though ![]()

Well, I don't have any issues personally, just the story from my friend. If you as a senior member of this board recommend Duncan and the UG, then I will definitely give him a call when I start my search. Thanks.

I'll also vouch for Duncan and his staff at UrbanGarage, they were very professional when I dealt with them, although I didn't end up purchasing the car for a few reasons. First of all, I'm 19. Student/part-time webdesigner at UBC, and I went in to look at a '72 911. I checked the car out, asked the regular questions, asked if I could take it for a testdrive and they were happy to let my friend and I take it for a spin. The salesmen (6'1) even sat in the back during a 20 minute test drive (not very comfortable, but not terrible, I've done it myself). I was very impressed with the service. |

Doug,
I spoke to Adriano at the Urban Garage, Duncan was out. Anyhow, they have a 1979 911SC Coupe over there, it is brown however. 250,000 kms, but good records, no smoke, no leaks, etc, so it sunds like a good possibility. Adriano will have the car at some PCA function tommorrow in Vancouver, if you or any of your buddies can have a look at it and give me some feedback I would appreciate it. I think I would be interested, but with the idea of stripping it and painting it. What do you think? Rick |

I think brown is a fine color for a Porsche - you'll grow to like it! My feeling has always been that you never fight the factory color. Unless, of course, we are talking about a shell and building up from scratch.
I would go look at this car in person to see if you can live with the color. And I would trust what DougZ has to say; he knows his poop! John

Nice, jwill911. That looks like the same color as the 930 on the cover (premire issue) of Purely Porsche GT.
Also, an interesting thread on; all you wanted to know about brown 911's, but. . . . . . keep the pict's coming.

Hi Strugs,
There are two good shops for older 911 PPI's in the Vancouver region that I would recommend. Weissach as mentioned and Scan Automotive in North Vancouver. Owner Andy Haglund is a PCA member and has owned several Porsche cars and is a top notch mechanic who will tell you the truth with no strings attached. You can reach him at 604 980 4542. Good luck, I remember well the fun I had searching for my car.

Doug, did you have your laptop with you while chowing down at Stuart Anderson's Black Angus? Stewart's last name is Davidson, not Anderson. I would suggest you owe Stewart a couple of nice ale's at a pub of his choice. See you in the morning.
