CIS cold start - YouTube

Cranks way too slowly. Battery bad?

Needs a valve adjustment.

When's the last time it had plugs, points, filters?

When's the last time the CO was set?

Running very poorly, for sure...

Agreed.
The battery is old(ish) I think the main problem is that it sits around not getting used and runs flat from time to time.
As for plugs, points, filters & CO I really can't say. definitely not for a while.
The car only comes out for a 10mile or so drive once a week so very little servicing has occurred in recent years.

Lots to do to get it back up and running properly.

N.B. When the engine is warm, after say 10 minutes of driving everything seems fine. Plenty of power and smooth idle.
I think a dyno would tell a different story though. I doubt all 200hp is available atm.

Start with a full service. Do a valve adjustment, service the distributor, change the oil, change all the filters. Check all of the main CIS components to make sure that they are the correct ones. Check the fuel pressures, check for vacuum leaks, set the CO.

Obviously, fix any problems you find along the way. If the gas isn't fresh, drain it and add fresh gas. Charge the battery, or replace it, and clean all the cables, including the grounds.

Agree with everything javadog said, plus drive it more! :)

I think it is odd that your speedometer needle jumps slightly when you turn the ignition key.
It might not be related to your poor running but it looks like there is some kind of spike there.

However javadog has given you plenty to get on with already.

Please keep us updated as I will follow this one with interest as I have a idle issue with my C3 though mine idles high and I have an occasional hot start issue that I work around by using a little gas pedal when starting.

The above comment about checking that all of your CIS components are present and correct is a valid one as my car seems to have parts from other models and my throttle handle is not connected at all.
Cheers
Bill

Thanks everyone. Will get to work on it. One other thing to mention but not sure if it makes a difference is that the starter motor is out if a Toyota Dyna light truck. The local porsche shop couldn't source a OEM one at the time but said the Toyota one would work. It does and has been in there for about 10 years.

Interesting, was it a direct fit?
