Startup procedure for a CIS 3.0L
Hi all. Just hoping someone can post a video and or their step by step startup procedure for a CIS 3.0L or similar. Cold start but warm weather. I want to see how it compares to our C3 to see if ours is running ok or the WUR needs work.
I will try to post a video of the C3 starting up tomorrow. Cheers, W. |
I just turn the key on my 78... It always starts.

Are you referencing a start up from a fresh rebuild or? |
C3?
you should not need to give it any gas, just turn the key. WUR should be checked with gauges. starting issues could be many things. WUR air leaks ignition mixture setting cold start system (hot starting) fuel accumulator check valve |
Thanks,
I will try to post a video but in the mean time this is my procedure. 1. Select Neutral 2. Pull up the little black lever about 4/5ths of the way up. 3. Turn the key. -Engine turns over and splutters to life after about 5-10 seconds. -Oil pressure needle madly and dramatically rises and falls for a good 60 seconds. -Revs rise and fall rather than staying constant -revs eventually drop down. 4. Reduce the amount of the little black lever. 5. reduce little black lever to nothing after about 10 minutes of idle/driving. N.B. This is from a cold start on a hot day when the car hasn't been started for a few days. Engine has not been tuned or re-built for a long time. Cheers. |

Stick the car in neutral, push in the clutch pedal and turn the key. Leave the hand throttle (black lever) off, all the way down. Do not press the throttle pedal.
Once it is started, if you want to raise the idle speed, do so with the throttle pedal and then pull the black hand throttle lever up until it holds the engine speed where you want it and you can release the throttle pedal. JR |

The WUR is enrichening the fuel during cold start and if adjusted correctly the car should run at a slightly high idle until the WUR is heated and starts to lean out. The black lever raises the idle speed for really cold days.

The Carrera 3.0 doesn't have this, so the lever only serves to open the throttle, which leans out the starting fuel mixture. Not what you want... JR |

I just made a short video of it starting up. Not applying the hand throttle (lever) is a no go. It will not stay running without it, or the right foot applied. |

The only thing is it is definitely not a cold day. 92deg in the garage. |
The car should definitely start right up without the throttle lever at that temperature!
I'm thinking you should test your fuel pressures and go from there. Do you have a Bosch CIS gauge kit for testing? I don't know the specs for your car, but others will chime in. |
Yeah as mentioned, simply jump in, turn the key and she fires right up. Comes clean after maybe 5 seconds or so. This happens always from about 2c to 45c ambient over here in Oz.
|
Sorry, haven't been able to upload video yet. It took 2hrs to upload into YT even though it only runs for 2 minutes. Won't be able to do it now for a few days.
From what everyone is Saying though it sounds like there is some kind of issue, which is what i had thought. |
Did it start quicker without the hand throttle? Maybe 1 to 2 seconds of cranking until it fired? That would suggest that your cold start valve is working properly.
Fuel pressures are important but I'd probably start by checking the operation of the auxiliary air valve and auxiliary air regulator. JR |
Yes it did start quicker without the throttle.
|
Okay, so check the operation of the auxiliary air valve first, then.

well, if I give u my secret, U'll at least consider viewing the new, but not officially released, 'Carrera 3.0 registry'> Check out PCA 911 Carrera 3.0 US Registry
Now, first put a key in the slot, since I know Ur's has a manual choke or idle adjustment lever, pull that black handle, right next to the pink/orange heat control lever, up a tick. Not too much so U'r 'pop-off valve' doesn't have to react, mine fires off on the 1st or 2nd second! Enjoy>>> |
