1970E Chassis Number

I deciphered the German to English trunk plate and I need to translate the chassis number.

What does it mean?

How many digits should it be?

Since it is 44 years old, it'a bit hard to read.

But: 91102-??-696 is best I can do.

CM

911 0 2 x x696
911 = Type 911
0 = 1970
2 = 911E
x = 0 (coupe) or 1 = (Targa)
x696 = consecutive build number

This car could be a Karmann built coupe. If so the VIN would be 911022X696. The sixth digit is 2.

You have the first 2 mixed up; 911022 is a Karmann coupe, 911020 is a Porsche built coupe.

Also Mr Minibar could look at the seven digit production number on the right side of the lower dash. The number could be 120XXXX for a Karmann coupe or 100XXXX for a Porsche coupe.

Yes, the data in post #5 is incorrect. I am 100% certain of the information in post 6.

Brian & Peter are correct; in either the VIN or the production #:
0=coupe
1=Targa
2=Karmann coupe
3=Karmann 914/6
