Would this manifold rust would be a problem?
it could just be brushed or blasted off right? looks like its just surface only but since its the mating surface i figured I would ask the experts before I spend some money.

You'd have to take heaps of metal off to use those. No difficult but you have to get the surfaces flat.
I guess it comes down to, How hard is it to find 993 clams in good condition second hand? |
not that hard, but this one is around a 3rd the price a good one is. I thought if it could be spruced up with a media blast it might be worth it. If they need something more than that I probably wont bother. Do you think its not worth the effort?
Basically my my thinking is you can get a decent used set of these for 500 if youre lucky, but its been a while since Ive seen any that cheap. Then I'll pay to clean then up a bit and cut and reweld one side of the manifolds so they match up to a 3.2. If I get this manifold for 100 and another not quite as rough one I see on sale for 250ish I think I could come away from it all for 500. On the other hand if its more trouble than its worth for $150-$250 savings I'll just try to get lucky with a nicer set.

Just wire wheel them and see what they look like. Isn't there a gasket also used on these?
To my eye, that's simple surface rust and will clean up nicely with a wire brush. It doesn't appear to me as bad as Peter suggests. If you see signs caking rust, you'll have to find a way to resurface or replace all the flanges.
Agree it's surface rust. A wire wheel will make them look like new. The gasket will make sure they won't leak. I think they are fine
I'd hit this with a flap disc to smooth it out and use it. Would take 5 minutes, no more.
After wire-brushing, would you recommend some sort of hi-temp paint to prevent this happening again?
i would use sandpaper on something hard and flat to keep the surface flat.
I nice new gasket will exclude air and moisture so I wouldn't use paint.
I'm thinking belt sander with 80 grit would make those as good as new...
blast or wire wheel it and your good to go. dont paint it . they only got rusty from sitting around off of the car. once they are back on the gasket will keep away the moisture
thanks everyone. ill go ahead with them and try using a brush wheel
