Possible 930 Purchase
Opinions needed here. I have finished my soul searching on what I want to do next. There is an 88’ Euro spec 930 numbers matching car near where I live which has just had a complete engine rebuild by a reputable P-car specialist shop and has ~94,000miles on the clock, completely stock original interior, only issue is a PO has installed an OE 993 body kit and Turbo Cup wheels. Don’t get me wrong the kit is very very good and suits the car to a certain degree but and it’s a big but it is not original to the car.
With the way 930 values are headed it seems like a good deal however the seller is asking ~$45,000 which is a bit steep considering it is not original in appearance. I have checked Hagerty values and they place a condition 3 car at $57,800, however I would grade the car as a 4 based on the body kit and wheels being non stock and that puts it in the $42,000 range. Given that I would need to find front and rear bumpers, sill plates, rear spoiler and OE Turbo fuchs will require an outlay of cash as well and to me that’s at least a $2 – 3,000 hit straight away. I have as yet not seen the car and would have a PPI done before making an offer. The car is fine for now and useable but I would definitely restore exterior to original spec and I would be right at $40,000 for this particular car would anyone disagree? ![]()

Hi,
I'd agree that the body kit is a deduction in terms of value. Those of us who frequent the 930/turbo forum have been discussing the Hagerty value charts a bunch recently. And while at first I think there was some skepticism regarding the accuracy of the recent uptick in value according to Hagerty, we've seen some transactions which seem to validate those numbers. All that said, you being in South Africa changes things a bit. I would assume the supply of cars there must be relatively small, so some regional adjustment may need needed. Lots more to consider beyond the body kit. If everything else on the car is well sorted, it could be a decent buy at 40k. You say the engine is fresh. What about the transmission, suspension, brakes. What is the condition of the interior?

Davy,
with the value of the 930 appreciating and that the subject car is already in your local vicinity, if your plans include long time ownership...I say make the 40k offer and take it. You can always gather the bolt on bits and correct the body to proper appearence . Someone will definitely snap up this deal if you don't ! Also, post your interests over in the 930 Pelican section and see what the guys say . Marty

I think you will be lucky to get that car for $45k and watch it appreciate quickly. Returning it to stock appearance won't be to hard.

If I understand your post correctly and you think 2-3k could bring it back to stock?
Turbo Fuchs alone would cost you that much, if you can find them

That caught my eye as well - the $2-$3K would probably be more like $5-$6K once you add in the costs for replacement door mirrors and paint to the other things your list. And if you will be paying someone to do the paint and installation work, then the total cost will likely be even higher.

Like others have said, I think you greatly underestimate the cost of returning the car to stock appearance. You need: front bumper/valence, flag mirrors, rocker panels, rear bumper, probably the rear taillights/center reflector, and tea tray tail. That's a parts tab of $5-10K. Fuchs will be another $1-2K. And then there's the labor and paint.
Maybe a weenie answer, but only you can determine how much this car is worth to you. But given how the 930 market is exploding (and I have no idea what it's like in South Africa), I don't think $45K sounds unreasonable. There's no way you are going to convince the seller that it should be $45K - $10K to give a final price of $35K. Good luck with your offer for $40K. Maybe you two can work something out in between.

Thanks for replies guys and yes I probably am underestimating cost to return to stock, but I already have a lead on a rear bumper, spoiler, sill plates and a few other goodies from a good friend of mine so should get those parts reasonably cheap. As far as the local market goes there is one more for sale which is an 82 with about 28,000 Kms all original but that going for around $80,000 so way beyond my budget. I would do the majority of the cosmetic body work myself so would only be looking at paint which depending on if the car is originally guards red would not be too expensive but then if it needs color change that's another story. I have made the offer on $40K just waiting on a reply. Import regulations preclude me searching elsewhere.
Moderator can you please move to 930 forum.

Well the offer was turned down he is sticking firm to $45K, given the money required to bring back to stock I am passing on this one. I am now back to the 2000 GT3 which I originally looked at. Just so much junk out there which is represented as a 'good' car. I really dont want another project as I just spent the last 5 years fixing up my old one. Have another project for this year anyway so I am going to go for the GT3.
