Reverse Light Switch Pin - 82 911sc
Hello All,
First of all I want to thank Wayne for such a great site and wonderful resource. This weekend I decided to replace my shifter bushings along with updating my shifter coupler. In the process of making my shifter adjustments, I got stuck in two gears. Neutral seemed to be reverse. I jacked up the rear and while rotating one wheel the other would spin in the opposite direction. A quick search revealed that many had encountered this dreaded situation. Ultimately the fix was to remove the backup light switch and push the pin back in. I removed the back up switch and the pin was protruding. I pushed the pin in with my finger about half an inch and then it would slowly slip back out. Every time I pushed it in, swepco would ooze out. From my research I knew that I would have to push it with enough force to disengage the gears. I inserted an allen wrench and pushed it with all my might and I did hear and feel something disengage. I started to slowly play around with my shifter and I could select all the gears. I rotated one wheel and the other would not move. I was back in business!! Now, my reverse lights are always on!!! So I think the the pin slid back out (since the rear is on jack stands) and is grounding the back up light switch. Could it be that the pin in not properly secured in its home position? If not, how do I properly insert the pin. My thought is to select reverse and then push the pin in? Thanks in advance! |

I wasn't having the "lights always on" problem after doing the suck in reverse / backup light pin fix (hit a hex key with a hammer). Mine were more intermittent. While the car was still up on the stands, I noticed the reverse lights were on, even though the shifter was in neutral. My wife sat in the car and worked through the gears to see when the lights would go on or off. After not recognizing a pattern and a few minutes of futility, I got back under the car and switched the two backup light switch wires. Thankfully, I left the rubber boot peeled back so I didn't have to fight with that again. I don't know if it even makes sense, but reversing which connector was in which hole of the switch fixed it! Now the lights only come on in reverse. Maybe it was just more generalized futzing and tightening up a wobbly connection the second time around, but I'll take it.

the skinny end of the pin goes toward the switch. maybe the wires are touching each other.

Swapping wires should make no difference as the switch doesn't care which way the signal travels through it.
It is just a dumb contact. As John said, the wires touching each other makes more sense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Rotating one rear wheel and having the other rotate the opposite direction is a normal occurrence; don't worry about that. It's the nature of the way differential gears work
