MFI barometric cell

A short passage in another thread got me to think.

Is there an easy way (or not so easy) to determine if the barometric cell on my MFI pump works ?

These things slide off the front page pretty quickly. Does anybody have suggestions on this ? Warren ?

Michel, some work well - mine is a bit temperamental so my engine runs rich (black soot in exhaust tip) when I climb passes over about 3,000 ft. Maybe Warren or someone else can come up with a better way to tell.

If you lift the pump by the cell you can verify that it does not work.

Well, I have lifted the pump by the cell a couple of times, before I was told not to. I can't imagine that thatdestroys the cell every time, though.

Michel,

Any 5000-8000 foot mountain passes in your region? Other than driving to the mountains and seeing if the pump adjusts for the altitude ... it gets complicated!

I suppose a test box of 1/4" or 6 mm plexiglass could be built that has a removeable end cap ... with a circular test port with removeable section that could be 'sealed' to the barometric cell with 'Plumber's Goop' and plumbed for a pressure/vacuum source and a vacuum/boost gauge. If a Gunston Gas Tester monitored the mixture while vacuum or pressure was varied ... and the mixture varied, I guess that would give you an answer as to whether of not it wiorks. It wouldn't tell you hoew accurate the compesation is, but working or not ... it would!

Thanks,

A few months ago, I sent an email to the Bosch Co. officer in charge of archives asking if they had material on the mfi system that could be shared . . . A letter showed up in my mail a month later with a bunch of stuff, some in English and some in German.

Now that I think about it, I'll try and use my high school German and see if there is anything on the barometric cell. I'll also try emailing again, never know.

And no, there are no 8,000 foot passes in my area. I could drive to New Hampshire and climb Mount Washington, 5,000 foot plus, but that's the highest I can reach without driving clear accross the country !

Cheers

Michel Richard

p.s. I'll let you know if I get anything from Bosch

If you call Gus at Pacific Fuel Injection he might be able to tell you if he tests them and if so what procedure he uses.

Good idea, but I must say I hesitate to phone up a gentleman like Gus who earns his living rebuilding pumps, not answering the phone for people who just want a bit of info.

I'll try the factory, and see what happens, first.

Michel
