Look for the Koni bulge above the spindle, though I think Boges have a small one too. Also look for the word Koni stamped on the tube.

ssssso is there a surefire way to identify them as either

Front Koni Shock, for cars equipped with Boge Strut Assemblies

or

Front Koni Shock, for cars with factory equipped Koni Strut Assemblies

Take the wheel off. Start wiping off the grime and buildup from the lower section of the strut housing. Koni struts usually have Koni inscribed in the metal. If not, there should also be a Porsche part number, and you can look that up.

Or pull the strut insert from the housing, which will take a bit more effort. But you would at least know for sure.

yes, which is why I posted a link to both types of shocks. so that I could identify what I've got on the car as either boge strut assemblies or koni strut assemblies.

afraid you might be right, will have to pull the strut insert. though looks like there's a slight bulge on the body of the shock for koni assemblies:

versus the one for boge assemblies:

anyone have first hand experience with these guys? be nice if I could order new shocks without tearing them down first.

That's what I am saying. Those are not visible so there is no way to tell what insert you have without tearing down the whole thing, which you are going to do anyway to change the insert.

However, if you simply look at the strut housing you can see that you have a Koni strut, so you get the Koni insert for Koni struts rather than the Koni insert for Boge struts.

Here's what a Koni strut looks like. Notice the taper/bulge above the spindle.
