Porsche Crest Difference between 1976SC and 1976 Carrera

Hi All,

I have a 1976 Carrera with an all steel Turbo Look. I'm interested in any history that would tell me the differences between the SC and Carrera.

TIA

Well, for starters, the SC didnt come out until '78...
76 = 2.7L, 78-83 = 3.0 L. SC also had rear flares. Of course theres more.. (suspension, brakes,. etc)

Hi rattlsnak..

Then in 1976 the only 911's were Carreras? I based this question on the VIN decoder found at:

http://www.0-100.it/porsche/chassis/chassis_engl.html

My VIN has a 6 in the model digit position.

Thanks

1976 had the "Carrera 3.0", the 911s, 911, 930 turbo, 912.

So you have a 3.0 Carrera. Nice. (although turbo flairs--strange)
That also brings up a more legit'question:
What are the differences between a 3.0 Carrera and an SC?
Not much would be my answer. There are differences though. . it's all how you ask.

Thanks Island911. I had heard the rumor that the 1976 "Carrera 3.0" had a 3.0L motor. Mine is already rebuilt so I dont need to worry about the dreaded pulled studs. I do want to get educated more on my particular car rather than assuming the rumor was correct.

Thanks

Ah yes, much to learn. Definitely use the search functionality here. There is a lot of info here. For instance, while the 1976 911's were known for pulling studs, the 3.0 was a new design and the exception. . . so even before a rebuild you would not have needed to worry about the dreaded pulled studs.
There are also some threads on best 911 books. Try a search using; 911 books Frere

The chassis, brakes, electrics are essentially the same. The main difference is in the engine. The engine uses the SC(930) al. case w/ the older 2.7 crank & distributor. Pistons, heads, cams(Carrera cams are retaded 6&deg from SC), cr, valves, ports are the same, Carrera clutch was the spring ctr. design, SC rubber ctr. CIS was the same(it has been rumored that the Carrera cis fuel dist. flows better but this is unconfirmed), Carrera con rod is the same except for big end width is +2mm. Carrera used 5 blade 245mm fan, early SC used 11 blade 226,mm fan(later SC used 245mm 11 bladed fan).

Carrera 3 as w/ all the al case engines thru 993 will snap studs. 2.7 will pull the studs out of the soft mg crankcase.

The block on the SC is the same as the Turbo 3.3
The block on the Carrera 3.0 is the same as the Turbo 3.0, which was lighter.

Thanks to All for the responses to a poorly worded question. My motor was rebuilt with a 3.2L big bore kit with mild cams. It runs well enough that I'm worried about breaking the smile muscles most of the time.

Pics of the Turbo Look sometime soon. Really well done I think. From 20ft. it looks like a 930 from the same era.
