Alternator ID

Hello everyone,

My alternator on my '78 SC went out yesterday while cruising at lunch. I heard a different sound from the engine bay, stopped and found the 11 blade fan wobbling and making noise and then the alternator light came on in the dashboard and my volt meter dropped down to just under 12V.

I pulled the alternator out today and found the black plastic cap that centers the rear bearing very brittle and broken (you can see in the picture). Wiggling the shaft produced obvious play between the bearing and the alternator housing. It looks like the brushes are worn very unevenly (no, one is not stuck)

So, if I may ask those of you who have worked on these before. Do you know which alternator this is? I thought only the '74 had replaceable brushes....not sure on that though. I don't see any labels or markings to indicate brand/model on this.

I don't mind ordering a new/rebuilt unit from our host, but don't want to get the wrong one.

Thank you,

Phil

Looks identical (other than the dirt) to my '78's 70 amp SEV Marchal.
Send it to a good rebuilder as they are NLA.

Thanks for that pic....it does look like my housing is the same as yours. I can even see a bit of yellow lettering on my broken plastic cap.

Before I turn to 'The Google', does anyone have a good rebuild experience with an alternator shop? I've never sent one out before.

That alternator is a 70 amp Marchal that has been rebuilt using non-original
diode plates, i.e. the originals used diode plates with soldered diodes (better for heat
dissipation).

Note: See the first pic as that alt was an original & non-rebuilt using the original diode plates.

Thanks, I corrected my post for amperage. I was thinking about something else...
I guess the rebuild won't last as long as the originals did. Alternator was rebuilt before I bought the car.
