The list of "while we're at it" continued... After having seen the wheels mounted on the car and everything being white, I decided to add a little bit of color so that its not the typical black and white car that we see around here and there...

So, following the gold colored titanium center lock hubs (my choice of color besides the silver 'nut' since the car previously wore gold wheels, and most racing 911's of the 70's had gold wheels), I decided to have the brake calipers also painted to match, even though they recently had been refinished to a beautiful red! However, the results are amazing...

Props to Vertex for making it happen!

As mentioned previously (Page 2 of the thread), the car had tinted rear lenses since the day I bought the car because the lenses simply looked tired. As to the rear reflector, I needed the car's reverse lights to show, so I had it painted solid a'la Ruf/1970's RSR to simply personalize the car that much more.

With all the new changes being made to it during this retro-modication, I opted to have new rear lenses treated to make them really, really red - all due to Alvaro! And, I changed the rear center reflector from white, now to black in order to hide the tinted reverse lights cutout... Then, instead of using a "typical" white Porsche script to run along the reflector, I decided to continue the theme of the gold accents, and we had the script done in that color instead in order to tie things up throughout the car.

Below, we are fitting the awesome looking Gary Stratton turbo duck tail into place to make sure it looked factory installed...

Harking back to my childhood during the 1980's in the Dominican Republic and always looking forward to being at the racetrack listening the awesome and beautiful engine noises emanating from not only Luis Mendez's RSR, but also those of regular competitors Cristobal Marte, Mandy Gonzalez, Tato Ferrer, and Kikos Fonseca's racing 911's, I just had to, had to install megaphone style muffler tips on mine.

We opted not to go too wild and run the risk of having them stick out a lot - how they're now installed is what I find perfect for a street application. The guys at Vertex manufactured a small flange so as not burn the plastic rear bumper muffler cut-out area - very cool to me! To me, the old school megaphone tips on the mufflers allows the car to maintain an aesthetic ode to my vision of a 1970's race car.

This was the car at its first outing at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Porsche Concours where it wasn't recognized by the attendees, but I got personal satisfaction that the former GoldCoast PCA President posed for a picture with it that was published in our local newsletter. It also got invited to the Inaugural Palm Event at Mar a Lago in Palm Beach, the only vehicle out of the 100+ there to get the invite, so at least someone was intrigued by the car...

Here's a link of a video taken of the car while there:

This was
followed by another link with an interview that starts for the first 45 seconds in spanish, then back to english.

Some additional pics of the car here and there - many different angles, some which look better than others... But, I am satisfied with the end result, which is a car done entirely to my taste and rather unique, something few can say about their 911. Aesthetically, the car is done but since November, the car inexplicably has spent (and continues to live) more time at Vertex than home. I hope it changes soon and that I can rack up serious mileage as it will have been 2 years this July I took it in, and it has been driven 2k troublesome miles in that time!

Otto, just read your entire thread, really enjoyed reading about what influenced you to do your own thing

I think you have done a fantastic job bringing all the details together that mean something to you.

The end result is a credit to you and your unique vision of what makes up your perfect 911.

Wish there were more builds like this instead of owners following the usual and well worn path when modifying their own 911's

Thank you guys for the support and encouragement! These are pictures of the car taken at Supercar Week in West Palm back in January.

Wow the precision on measuring the flares and body work was amazing..

Came out a lot better then I thought it would look. Personally like more 'flowing' wide bodys and that rear rocker cut is very different but with your wheel setup and the added lights you pulled it off perfectly!

Good job! Beautiful car.

OttoB 02-11-2016 11:14 AM

Even though the pics below are of a non-C2 911, this is what you end up with on C2 models with boxed rockers/widened flairs and why you probably never see anyone else widen theirs them besides RWB. I personally do not think this looks good, but to each their own!

The car has moved onto a new custodian and I couldn't be happier about it falling into the right hands... Check out this video:

I apologize for the quality of the pic with Magnus, but "Chimera" was featured on the cover for the program at last month's very cool and amazing Porsche gathering in Miami - check out the gallery at the link for Das Ren Treffen here:

Flo, it is hard to explain... I went to check your pretty cool blue 911 out and my answer to your question above would be the same if someone went and asked you "Hey, why did you put Martini type stripes on the side of your car and across the windshield, or put yellow lenses up front, or installed a ducktail - your car seemed just fine if it was stock instead?"

The motivation and inspiration any of us have to add our personal touch to our homes, cars, etc. comes from a variety of different reasons. That is why there are many colors in the rainbow, many flavors of ice cream, coffee, etc. What works for one person, may not work for another. My personality is such that I cannot just own a car without adding my own personal touches - this one happens to have received many!

In hindsight to perhaps give you a better understanding behind the initial transformation, the biggest factor for the mods was the lack of having a genuinely deep dish rear wheel, which is possible in all older '74-89 911's. Other than the 964 RSR Carrera 3.8, I have never seen any other C2 car that had stock rear aggressive/race looking wheels that were more or less the same to the older 911's... I had 295 series tires in the pic above, yet the depth of the lip was minuscule. So, with the addition of wider wheels that I felt were necessary for me to be happier with the aesthetics of the car, plus the OEM Turbo tail being warped and needing a replacement (so I got a ducktail instead), that is how the evolution of the car came about.

I know its not for everyone, but whether its a good thing that its the only one in the world like it or bad because many people don't like it and prefer (OEM, RWB which are everywhere these days, or ?), I am proud of what I accomplished with it.

Like the saying goes - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
