what is this squeak?
 

My p-car has a new squeak after last weekend's DE. Can you help me identify what it is? This is what is sounds like as I gently push up and down on the front right of the car.

Geez, for $500 I can get all new shocks. On the other hand, is there any way to lubricate the squeak out of the shock?

Sounds exactly like my car, WAD its those poly bushing crying out for some lubrication.

Can't help with your question aside from checking hte suspension bushings. But that if ROFL funny!

Shocks is just my guess as I have had such sounds from my other cars that ended up being shocks. I don't know if lube is you answer. Repost with a different title (w/shocks) and see who bites. There have been lots of shock related posts in the past so I'm sure there are a lot of BTDT guys.

You were pushing up and down on the fender repeatedly to make that happen? Or did you push just once?

My '77 just started making a similar sound after my last track outing. I would describe it as a squeeky gate door sound. Just slam the door once and it creaks for several seconds.

It seems that it is coming from inside the fuel tank. I assume it is the fuel level sending unit, yet the guage appears to working fine. It's the damndest sound, just creaking away.

In that case I'd check your front bushings. Particularly the sway bar.

Do you have stock bushings?

Try shooting a little wd40 on the bushings, one at a time, and see if it goes away.

Yeah, it's the sway bar bushing (one or the other). The WD-40 didn't penetrate either from the sides. I'll have to keep oiling them until it goes away.

I had this same squeak about two years ago on the right front also and I thought it was the same thing the bushings, I oiled and oiled the hell out of them, but to no avail. So I gave up and took it to the Porsche dealer and the mechanic there said that it was the torsion bar. The grease and worn thin and stopped it form twisting properly. Well sure enough we put it on the lift and took out the torsion bar and lubed it up and that was it no more squeaks. That would be the cheapest and best option to try first. And a lot less trouble.
But that is just my .02 I am sure that some people would disagree with me though.
Either way let us know what it was or what you did.

Iv'e been listening to this interesting sound for 5 minutes now and can't turn it off, even when I close the thread. Sounds better than some of my son's rap CDs though.

If your shocks are knackered the bounce squeak will always be there.
Determine which side of the car is it emanating from and can jack THAT side (the front) of the car up so that wheel is off the ground. Let it down again - has the squeak is gone? (temporarily) if so I'd say it's your torsion bar, not the shocks.

I'm starting to believe it's my shocks. So $500 needs to be put into the p-car fund.

I get the same squeak from my left front. Only after it's rained, though. Fortunately these days it's a rare occurrence that I'm driving the P-car in the rain.

i had that on my 82SC

seemed to come and go...especially bad on cold days...

I'd get some white lithium grease and get under the car and lube everything...the sway bars have brackets with rubber bushings...put some bewteen the metal and the rubber...
mine is gone but this was during summer...maybe it will be back this winter

do that before spending money on shocks...

I thought shocks were bad when the car ocillated when you pushed down on it...

I jacked up the squeaky side and bounced the wheel with a piece of wood on top of a fulcrum...no squeak.

I lowered her back down and still...no squeak.

Sounds like I need to follow Ken's advice and remove the torsion bar and lube it up.
