Valve Adjustment Cost

What is the typical shop cost for a valve adjustment?

I know, I know, I should be doing it myself, but I'm traveling 7 out of the next 9 weeks, and I simply don't have time to do it.

Thanks!

How long does it take for a pro to do it, or how much do they charge?

Sorry to bring it up, but that's one of the annoying things about "book rates", especially on maintenance items.

It's a 3ish hour job here in VA, so that comes to about $200, plus $30 something for the gaskets/nuts. Maybe add $30 for the oil change. I've never paid more than $250.

Should be cheaper than that.

I recently started doing it myself, but prevously paid $331.00 valve adjust and alternator belt, I supplied the oil and filter. It's usually ~2 hours labor plus parts and oil. After doing it myself it's money well spent. Took me all day the first time, should be able to get it down to 4 hours next time. But I changed the plug wires, checked the compression and cleaned all the black gasket sealer off the heads and valve covers someone in the past had put on there.

When I was in college at FSU (Tallahasse, FL for those that never here of Bobby Bowden), there was a shop called Eurosport (I think..college was a bit hazy) that I took my car too. I was broke and looked the part too so they may have taken it easy on my, but they charged me about $200 for a valve adjustment (I think). If anyone is in the area, check them out. They were always good to me. I hope they are still there (in a hidden industrial part of the town).

When I got rid of the CAT and backdated the exhaust, backdated the heater hose routing, changed oil lines and removed the A/C, I cut the length of this job in HALF AT LEAST!!!! I cannot overstress this. With those parts out of the way, it is a pretty quick job. With them in the way, it is most of a day.

Next step is an air compressor and one of those air ratchet-shaped things. That'll reduce by another 15 minutes.

One thing to remember is that the motor has to be absolutely cold when the valves are adjusted, so bringing it in the night before and picking it up the next day is not a bad idea. Sure makes the mechanics happier as they can drain the oil overnight and not have to mess with playing around with warm motors.
