What coil with MSD ignition?
Guys,
What coils can I use with an MSD ignition system? I see that MSD offers one, but I'm hoping there's another alternative... Is there a specific rating necessary on the coil?

I've seen statements from MSD that say you must use their coil. But I've installed a 6A ignition with a Bosch coil, as well as the MSD coil and both seemed to work fine.
If you go with the MSD coil, get the high vibration version. It is rated for mounting in the non-upright position so you can use it in the factory bracket. If you take of the MSD sticker it looks discretely like any other black coil.

Is there a substantial difference between the stock Bosch coil and the Blue coil? Wil I be missing anything significant (granted it's only $30...

MSD lists coils that are compatible and the Bosch blue is on the list.

How much is that coil Joe? Any particular reason you selected that over the Bosch blue?

Chris,
I use an MSD Blaster "High Vibration" coil with my 6AL. They also sell a plastic coil wire hold-down to keep the wire in there no matter what.

Chris:
I used it in my 914/6 so it gave me the ability mount where ever and However I needed to mount it and it is not very large fits in the palm of your hand. It also has nice rubber mounting points for anti- vibration . The cost was about $40

I was told that those "hot" MSD coils are a good plan (in conjunction with the MSD unit). They provide 40k volts and will do so throughout the rev range. I'm told the Bosch coils will not do this. This allows one to gap the plugs at .05 which, supposedly, gives a larger spark for better flame propagation....just requrgitating the advice I was given for my carbed engine, here.
In actual practice, it works GREAT !! I used the high vibration thingy. I can now drive the car around at 2500 rpm (or less) without fouling plugs.....not that it's any fun ![]()

Summit Racing should have what you need. I bought my MSD and high vibration coil from them.

I recommend the simple Bosch blue coil - works really well. We can also order the MSD coil too if you want it...

I was advised to go with the High Vibration One as well. Its cheap enough and worked fine.
