Need a VIN tag from a '74 911, does anyone have one??
I want to assign a VIN to my VIN-less '74 RSR tube-frame clone race car. I'll do it legally: take the tag, make a bill of sale, apply for a title.
Can anyone help me out with a VIN tag on an otherwise worthless '74 Chassis? thanks guys, or, is there another way to do this? Mark.

I think Aase has a few NOS VIN plate blanks from that era. You might contact them.

Will do...I assume (with some research) that you mean Aase Racing in California, Jeff or Alan?
Mark.

Not sure how it works in Texas, but out here in California you'll need more than a VIN tag to make the car legal. Not to mention, assigning a VIN tag to another car is illegal. Any Highway Patrol officer worth his salt will check for secondary VINS in the "hidden" places. Any discrepancies and the car will be impounded.
I'm not telling you what to do or not do, just providing info, FWIW.

Looks like a candidate, but not sure getting the tag off is possible with the windshield in, might need to wait until it's parted out first.

Please be very careful when chopping VINS off one car and attempting to paste on to another vehicle. Its a very big deal in every state that I'm aware of and with the FEDs as well. In my former life, I impounded many cars for hinky VINs. Generally, the car is taken and the driver may be arrested until its sorted out. If there are any numbers on your RSR, you may be able to verify the VIN and get an assigned VIN. If there are no numbers and the car is mostly a scratchbuilt, you may be able to get it registered as a special construction(like a kit car). Police Raid Classic Recreations Over VIN Swapping

Yikes, ok great advice: I certainly need to document (gov. form-wise) my intent if I go this direction. Lots of calls to make it appears

Ok called a friend of mine who restores cars: for American cars since the '60's, manufacturers have installed hidden VINs in cars where the hidden VIN is rotated yearly to help the Feds track stolen cars which have been re-VIN'd.
Can people tell me where i could find a possible hidden VIN on my "believed to be" '74 racer? :/ Mark

There should be an obvious one in the trunk area.

Is that actually legal to take a VIN from one car and put it on another one?

I can't tell if the chassis cross support above the factory fuel tank location is still present-should be stamped there. Also door sticker if door isn't gutted.
Other locations as well. Most officers(even those not extensively trained in VINs will know about the stamping under front hood. Nearly a certain impound if you add a VIN/dash from another car to yours and one of its original numbers is still present. Nope

Of course, you do understand that you would be committing a felony offense by tampering with or, worse, transferring a VIN from any car to another one, right?
Also, you do understand that there really is no anonymity on the Internet, particularly when your user ID is your name, right? Finally, you do understand that getting to live in "the big house" doesn't mean you get to live in a really big house, right? I would offer that the best advice is to do yourself a favor and forget it. Get yourself a nice, legal "assigned VIN" from the state police. There really is no legal way to do what you seem to continue to intend to do, and there is no way to justify it to the police or a judge. Getting the car impounded and/or crushed would be the very least of your worries. Anyway, they would not let you bring it with you to prison. |

Even if you somehow magically did it "legally" - then what? You trick a future buyer - one of us? The thread should be banned by a moderator.
