Leather dash patterns
I'm planning to recover my SC dash with new leather and need some assistance. The dash was originally covered in leather but this was eventually removed and a dash cap was installed. Seeing as I don't have much of this original leather, I am unsure how the seam was sewn on the factory units. In addition, i'm trying to understand if the unit was one or two pieces? With this in mind, I am wondering if anyone has images of the original leather removed?

I don't have the leather removed from my dash but can post some closeup daylight pictures of a Weissach leather dash, the intact and exposed stitching, staples in their glory, in hopes of motivating you and others to contribute. Although mine is already showing warps by the passenger side vent, I plan to attempt the same before chucking it.

Joe Poindexter at Ace Auto Fabric 816 221 8370 has a love for Porsches, as seen by his 79' 930. He can do wonders ( in bus 57 years) to most any dash. Cracks fixed for good. Here are some photos of a job he just finished for a Boxster customer. I can get 911 photos of a french seamed dash if you like. Can use any type of leather including OEM material.

I had my dash done by Auto's International. I purchased the leather from GAHH to match my Weissach. The stitching is the same BUT the other way. you can see in the pictures what i mean. I love it. The workmanship is superb and couldn't be happier. The first picture is the original Weissach dash.

Patterns? I know of three:
-New: looks a million bucks. -A few years old: starts pulling around the center vents, showing the glue or staples. -A few years older: torn, bent, lifting the cap over the gauges, and if you'r unlucky (like I was) lifting so much it pushes the windshield upwards, allowing air to whistle its way in. And, of course since leather dashes are made by adding a (thick) layer over a nicely fitting standard dash, the fit is tight at best, compromised at worst. Seriously, unless one lives in Alaska, never drives the car or plans to sell in 2 years' time, it is a BAD idea. I know, I know, you can treat the leather religiously with whatever is the rage in leather care, but.. forget it. It WILL warp. Comments based on over 20 years of owning leather dash cars, 5 in total, all german, 2 in unobtainable colors. |

My leather dash on my new to me SC was hard, and all seams split. Was surprised to find the perfectly fine vinyl dash beneath. Well, except for the yellow glue. Any suggestions for getting that off.

Try a little citrus-based paint stripper to soften it up. Try a SMALL area first and don't leave it on long. You want to soften the glue without damaging the vinyl underneath.
