Show me your 17" 3pc Fuchs

Hi,

I'm interested in the 3pc Fuchs style wheel sold by Lindsey racing. I've seen J. Olson's 2 pc Lindsey constructed wheel, and would now like to see what the 3pc version looks like on an actual car. If anyone has this wheel (or similar), I'd appreciate some pics. FYI, I'm currently running 16x7,9 Fuchs refinished by Al Reed (polished spokes w/ clear) in near perfect condition. If I decide to upgrade to the larger wheel, I'll likely sell my current set. Thanks.

These are kinda hard to see, they are 17x8 with a 245x40/17 in the front and 17x9 with a 275x40/17 in the rear. larger rims will fit but I'm limited in size by the class I race in.

Lindsey does their three piece wheels alittle different then mine are done. They sandwich the Fuch center inbetween the rim halfs, mine are put together like a BBS rim where the center is on top of the rim halfs. I dont think it matters just noting a difference.

Some people will say that the three piece rims will leak, I've had mine on the car for about three years and they do not leak at all.

The three piece wheels are very expensive and have a few advantages that are important to me for how I use them, plus I like the look of them better then the two piece wheel, which to me, has to much space between the rim and the center. Personally though, I think for the money, the Two piece rims are the way to go on a street car and would be what I would probably get.

Here's 17x8 and 10s.
I got them at Mirage International in San Diego.
http://www.mirageintl.com/parts/otherracecomp.htm

Just over $2k for the set of four.
They come with polished or satin finished barrels and black centers.
Talk to Jae Lee and tell'm "long Mike" refered you.

More pics of the same car with red 17 inch rims too.

Thanks for the responses.

MMARSH,

Who makes your wheels and are you aware of any advantages/disadvantages to the different construction?

I agree that with the two piece wheels the space between the centers the the rims. Your wheels look great. I'm surprised that a wheel that size with the tires your running fits under the SC/Carrera flares.

ted,

How do your wheels compare to those offered by Lindsey?

Thanks.

I am not familiar with the Lindsey 3 piece rims.
I have seen Jack Olsen's Lindsey 2 piece welded rims and they look great.

Some have an issue regarding welded wheels or bolt together.

Regarding Mike's point on the location of the center section.
Mine too have the center section on the outside.
I think this is preferred because it reduces the inner sealed surface areas.

If the center section were located between the two barrels it would create two ID surface areas that could potentially leak air.

My rear tires are 275/40 rears, Hoosier or Victor racer.
On the front I run a 255/40 Victor racer or the 245/40 Hoosiers.

Maximize your tire width for max grip and max cornering speeds.

thanks Jack, when I've chased you at Fontana or Laguna Seca that thought has crossed my mind.

Measure from the lip of the flare to the inside fender well, should be 10 or 10.5 inches minimum.

You may have to roll the fender lip or if not painted just cut off the lip.

Next clearance issue is the oil lines to the thermostat, you most likely may have to re-route then away from the passenger rear tire for added clearance. I'll give you a pic if you need.

Next clearance issue is the adjustable spring plate bolts,
might have to face grind them too.
They require little clearance (1/8 inch) as the camber changes during wheel travel are minimal closer to the axis.

Error on the side of a little too much back (negative) space on your 17s so you can fine tune with 1/8 or 1/4 inch spacers.

Fassi,

The mods that Ted mentions are all you need to do. I run 1/8 spacers on the rear and have no problems at all.

Not a good pic, but here is 275/40-17 on a 9x17 HRE Fuchs replica on the rear of my '76 with SC flares:

Is that a stock SC Flare? The lip looks more like a Turbo flare in the picture.

Yep. Stock SC flare. After the shop that did the bodywork installed the flares I even measured the width of the car at the rear flares and it's the same as an SC.

measured lip to inside wheel well

I have 11 1/4" , and 17's with 275's do not fit. Most measurments I have taken on other SC flare cars ar 11 1/2 to 11 3/4, and these fit. Anyone else measue 11 1/4" and 17's with 275's fit?

Thanks,
