901 Transmission Problems

I have a 1971 911 I just restored and got running after five years. On my first test run the other day putting around the neighborhood, I did so in 1st gear no problems, as I was completing my second lap around (about 200 yards total), I took it out of first gear to let a car back out of their driveway. After that, I've never been able to get it back into first. I've not been able to get it back into first since running or sitting. It did not grind at any point, so no signs of a bad gear. I've tried adjusting the transmission using advice from the forums, and I drained my transmission fluid and added Motul 75-90 to the transmission this weekend. The fluid that I drained did not have any metal pieces in it or signs of a bad transmission, infact the fluid was really clean. I've tried double clutching, rolling slowly. It's like I'm trying to shift into a brick wall. Does this mean first gear is gone? It will easily go into all the other gears even reverse with no problems.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Double check your shift Coupler. I like to use a helper to push the shifter to the side so I can concentrate on the coupler.

It is possible that something shifted around. How old are the trans mounts? Also is the clutch properly adjusted? The shifter bushings would not hurt to check them as well.

Agreed. Check all your linkage bushings, the little cup that the shifter ball sits in and also the coupler bushings accessed between the back seats. I did a drive today and while I was shifting I was feeling the vibrations coming through the the shifter and all that vibration takes it's toll on all those parts. I replaced mine about a year ago and the old ones were toast!

I have all new bushings in the shifter, new transmission mounts and engine mounts. Pretty much every bushing, bearing, and mount is new on the car. I am running a welt meister short shift. Are they prone to having problems.

Is the coupler oem? Even if you remove to check for slop, it is hard to tell. When I changed mine to the Whiisperer's coupler it totally changed my shifting for the better.

Just try adjusting it again, you will find the sweet spot. Then think about a performance coupler.

The coupler is OEM, I put new bushings in it and smoothed the shaft so the coupler would move very freely. The new bushings made it ver stiff. Spent time making it move freely.

Oh I see, then I default to coupler adjustment, it is hit and miss. It took me more than several tries.

Even a local well known wrench had difficulty. I finally fixed it with my wife helping me by holding the shifter in place while I messed with the coupler.

I will continue to adjust the coupler. If revers works is it safe to assume first gear should work? Aren't they the same gear?

Oops, sorry, Not sure about the 901, it may have the 1st and R as the same gear.

Well, if it the same gear, then should it not go in if R goes in?

I still say try to adjust the coupler either way, you got nothing to lose.
