Brake Job Newbie
New owner of an 88 911 Targa. Emergency brake didn't work so I began the path to repair. Find out I have a cracked rotor disc so I am redoing the hand brakes, rotors and pads. I have begun reassembly and just spent an almost two hours trying to get those conical springs locked on the pins holding the brake shoes. This forum is outstanding so I know someone will have a suggestion on how to get these attached. Thanks for your help.

Use a needle nose, hold the end of the lock pin and use other hand to push the spring back and twist the pin and to go over the divet to release the lock. Gosh did that make any sense? :-(

Jim, I did the rear brakes of my '73 VW Beetle 3 weeks ago and I could relate to your post. Have I not done it recently, I won't have any idea how to implement your suggestion. That's why pictures help a lot in explaining things the easy way. Tony |

Draco, I think your instructions make sense if I was unlocking the springs - already did that. Trying to put the new springs on. I think your idea about holding the pin in the back with needle nose may work as well. Thanks

A brake tool makes it easy. That cylinder on the upper right allows are to slip them right into place:
