Black Ugly

The stone chips in front finally got bad enough so that the front bumper, hood and fenders are getting another coat of paint. It should look better by the time of the German Auto Fest, next weekend. But right now, it ain't pretty.

Jack,

Are you going to go and ahead and take the fiberglass plunge while you are at it?

That car has really evolved into a force to be reckoned with, and it has been very informative and entertaining witnessing the transformation over the past couple of years.

I know you were talking about some Lexan and other dietary introductions a while back, so I was wondering if you were going to take advantage of this paint time to do some things with the body panels as well.

No, John. The front fender and hood are fiberglass, but that's where it will stop -- in front. From now on, my priority is going to be removing weight almost exclusively from the back. Fiberglass rear quarter panels, a lexan rear window, and no more sunroof are next on the list. But that's part of a 'phase two.'

I think it can be a mistake to remove too much weight from the front of the car -- hood, bumber and even fenders are all pretty easy. But unless you keep it proportionate, you end up (as I did) with a 63/37 weight distribution to the car. While it might be light, it's not going to handle very well if it's set up that way.

I'm also thinking about going to a 72 oil tank at the same time as the rear quarters -- again, in order to move weight forward.

This particular work is purely cosmetic. Things had gotten pretty well blasted up front. I'm going to try some of that 3M film, next.

Jack,

Are they going to repaint just the front area that they have sanded down and not the whole hood?

I recently brought my newly painted car back to the paint shop to see what we can do about the front end chips. I've only put 1,000 miles on her with the new paint and she looks like she went to a rally race. The owner at the paint shop told me I could only repaint the whole hood and not just a part of it because it was black and as for the chips he said they were normal.

Just wondering.

Today was the first day of work on the car. They're painting the whole hood. Everything in front of the doors. The glass is coming out, too.

The shop, in L.A., is Automotive Innovations and Restoration, which is run by Pelicanite "KevinP73."

Jack,

My whole car looks like that right now! I'll take some photos probably tomorrow when I go check it out. Yours will be looking good again in no time.

Hey Jack,

I am sure you have thought of it but what about putting the oil tank in the drug smugglers box instead of in the rear?

Yes, I've thought of the oil tank up front. But I have my AC accumulator there.

I know. I know. But until I start trailering the car, that big fat AC system is going to stay. Willow Springs, Las Vegas, Buttonwillow -- these places get hot. What fun is driving the same car you race to the track if you suffer from heat stroke on the way there?

One of the coolest things I ever saw was this guy with a 288 GTO at one of our POC events. It was 114 out and here he was with windows rolled up, A/C blasting away, doing a D.E. event at Riverside. Lucky guy- driving a great car at a great track and staying very cool while doing it!

I hear you about the A/C. My car is black and sometimes I regret taking the A/C out.

Jack you make me sick how you can get all this done to your car (sarcasm) Here I am wishing my car could look as good as yours, then you rip it up and say its not enough.

I LOVE your car

Thanks, Sean. (And thanks to Kevin, too, for getting this work done so quickly.) In addition to the hood, fenders and two valences, Kevin's also doing a track tail for me, to hopefully replace the IROC tail I've been using.

The new tail will get the aluminum extensions and a big wing that will be just above roof level. I'm not crazy about the look of these tails, but... there's no substitute for downforce.

Then, the old valence is going to get mated to the chin piece that came in today. This will be the track-only valence, which will get an even larger splitter than the one built into the new piece. The whole new front bundle will get painted black, but not with paint. I'm going to use a product on it that is usually used for lining pickup truck beds. It will be black, like the rest of the car, but considerably more resistant to chips. It's also going to have ducts for brake cooling, in addition to the oil cooler openings, which will be enlarged slightly.

Here at the Olsen Racing Werks, the development never stops.
