Broke of piece of metal, how to fix?
A piece of metal was broken off when I tried to loosen the bolt for the oil pressure sender. How can I fix this? Ideas?

Burn the fire.

Uh oh...
I don't think JB weld is going to do the trick. What's on your "While I'm In There" list for a teardown?

Give JB Weld a try. For cold weld, nothing is better.

Oh that is not good. That is part of the engine case. Late model cases are aluminum, but yours might be magnesium. If aluminum you could pull the engine and have that welded up and re-tapped. Don't know what you do if it is magnesium. Hopefully someone on the board will have an idea.

If I'm not mistaken, that is part of the case, and it won't be an easy fix. It'll take some custom work to fix it, like a threaded in piece that is epoxied as well, then a new hole drilled and tapped (a little further out than original) to accept the oil pressure sender block and cam oil line.

Put some duct tape on it.

Assuming that this is the 1971 engine, it is magnesium.
This is a pressurized location that will need to be strong (design pressure can be 100+ psi). If you can find a shop that is competent in welding Magnesium alloy, you MAY be able to get it fixed. Do you have the piece that broke off?

Looking at it it's almost 1/2 the diameter of the fitting. Any repair that doesn't involve replacing the case half will not work. You can try to epoxy it, cold weld, put a rock in it, whatever sooner or later, with oil pressure pushing against it, it will fail. Sorry but this is a major breakage. And if it's a MAG. case, good luck finding a welder to repair this.

yer screwed unfortunately. take heed, those who advocate removing the sender the "easy" way. take the block off and clamp it in a vise, then reef on the sender. you will need a new engine case. the small amount of metal there and the close proximity to the oil passage make for a very shakey repair at best.
JB weld? are you kidding?

That area goes up to 80psi... I can't even imagine the legal liability as you spew 10 liters of oil all over the road within 30 seconds or so...
I feel for you, but that needs to be welded. If you are lucky, someone might be willing to try to TIG weld that in situ and tap it...but if any shrapnel gets in your motor you are toast... |

As a temporary fix, without pulling the motor and tearing it down, you might try to plug the broken area and utilize the nearby temp sender bore to feed the cam tower. You'll have to get creative, use a hollow bolt and fabricate a block to tee into. My example, below, is probably too long, but an MFI filter console bolt should work...

I cracked the tab off for the AC compressor on the block of my 928 once took it to the best welder in town he built the area up by welding it over and over and then tapped it out worked great and did not even have to remove the engine. I know mine was aluminum but I would guess the right welder could do the same for you Good Luck

Just thinking out loud.....Can't you pull the sender, weld it closed?
Deal with oil pressure somewhere else?

Are you guys sure that some JB Weld won't do the trick? At least for a temporary fix?

John, you might be correct, but plugging the broken area would be far easier and safer than a fix to support the pieces hanging off it, and the bolt to fasten them, with engine still in car. Someone in Norway would have to examine the situation and decide, but his only viable alternative is very, very expensive.
