Parking brake light not working

The parking brake light in my '86 930 does not come on at all. Is there a likely cause or will this be an expensive electrical diagnosis? Are there any things I can try before turning it over to an expert. As you can probably tell, I'm not that comfortable with electrical problems. Thanks for the help.

Have you tested the bulb? It's likely the only thing wrong.

I have identified the problem as a bad bulb but can't seem to find a way to remove it. I removed the red cover but can't get to the bulb with my fingertips. Does the housing come out? I pried it a bit but didn't want to force it. Thanks.

Very gently with a pair of needle nose pliers grab the bulb and pull it straight out. If you have a large set of tweezers they might also work.

Thanks for the replies, but I think I have a later assembly where you can't just pull out the bulb. The bulb appears to be soldered into a circuit board and the circuit board is not removable from inside the car. I can't believe that I have to access the assembly from the trunk and have to replace the whole board just for a burned out bulb. Any tips for minimizing the headache and cost would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Reed930,

Before you turn it over to an expert or replace the circuit board for a burned out bulb, check out the following link, some other member had similar problem to yours and was able to fix the problems by checking a few items that I suggested.

Marker Lights/ Tail Lights Inoperative

Good luck!

Lee,

Thanks for the advice. Truly amazing how a board like this helps people share their expertise. I never would have looked for a bad diode in diagnosing a burned out bulb and will remember to look there if a similar problem arises.

I think my problem is different, though. The only light that doesn't work is the interior parking brake warning light. And the bulb does appear darker than the other two.

Anything you can recommend short of going in through the firewall? I looked a little closer at the base of the bulb and it is definitely soldered to the board. Thanks.
