Bright Switch-Steering Wheel Remover

I have developed the infamous 'hit a bump and the headlamps turn onto bright'. So, while researching how to fix it, it looks like I'll need to remove the steering wheel.

If I'm removing the steering wheel, it seems like a good time to put a new one on since mine is cracked in 4 places and crooked.

The last time I removed a steering wheel, I was sixteen years old and nearly chopped my own head off.

Can anyone recommend a good steering wheel remover? Hopefully, on Pelican. My searches come up with nothing.

As an aside, is the Momo the best option for an 86 3.2 Carrera?

I have never used a puller on my 911. It just comes right off.

No special tool needed, just use a deep socket and remove. Take care not to over torque it on install, it can mushroom the spindle then it will be a biotch to remove the next time.

Just make sure you remove the fuse or disconnect the battery.

Center the wheel and try your best not to move the wheel side to side before removing or score/mark the spindle prior to removal.

Jim

P.S. searchh WON headlight switch, WON started it and many contributed on the switch repair.

Thanks for the tip! Do you happen to know what size socket it takes?

Back the nut off a couple turns then unseat the wheel - safer.

That would be it.

Also do not use the steering wheel lock to hold it in place while you loosen or torque the nut down, you do not want to break it. Have a helper hold the wheel while you loosen or hold it tight with one hand.

Porsche steering wheels are not fitted with a taper, and come right off. There are NO 28mm wrench size fasteners used on a Porsche, IIRC. The nut is 27mm. Mark the wheel and shaft with a scratch to help get it back on right. Tighten the nut by holding the steering wheel in one hand and the ratchet or breaker bar in the other. Real tight is good enough. mind you don't slip and break the windshield!

Deep 27 mm deep socket with a short extension is what you need. Just loosen the nut a few turns, give the wheel a good pull, and it will come loose. Then remove the nut and remove the wheel.

I use one of those "Club" steering wheel locks to hold the wheel for leverage while turning the nut.
