Targa top fitting

Does anyone have a pic to show me how the front beading should sit in the front. Should I even be able to see the beading standing in front of the car? Have had the top redone and the correct seal is in, it still sits up higher than it looks like it should and wind noise above 60 is insane.
Thanks!

This might help.

Replacing these parts on our '86 reduced the wind noise down to the very minimum,
and improved the fit considerably.

Good luck,

Gerry

When you say correct seal, did you know that the replacement seal is not the same size as the original and it causes the top to sit too high relative to the windshield frame. The end result is a lot of wind noise. I'll take a picture of my seal height and the top installed and post it tonight. Edit. The pictures that 86 ssinit posted make mine redundant, gee I wish my top looked that good! I will also look up the email address for Dan in New Jersey, his shop can supply the right sized seal.

Dave

The beading in the front and rear of the top should fit flush against the body, not down in the channel, nor up.
No, you should not see the beading while standing at the front of a Targa. Here are a few pics of a correctly restored top.
This is from a 964 Targa that is very quiet compared to other Targa's I have driven and owned.

You should not drive the car with a top that catches that kind of wind. The top, despite the safety catches integrated into the latches, can fly off and you will be weeping.

Clearly something is preventing the top from dropping into its position. The bead should sit exactly as shown.

The holes that the locating peg (item 9 in the post above) fit into can become plugged over time as the plastic deteriorates and ages on the pegs. Same is true for the rear (item 35).
If these holes are plugged up or have debris in the bottom it will prevent a flush fit

Yes, both my targas have tops that look like that as well. Something is not right with your top. Side seals and window adjustment have an effect too. Roll down your windows and see if it seats better.

Targa Top Service Bulletin

If needed, I have a PDF copy of the Porsche Targa Roof Service bulletin.

Assuming that all of the seals are in good condition,
along with the coverings & pegs:

I adjust the windows on our Targa by:

1. Rolling up the window, noting any top lift.
2. Placing a piece of masking or painter's tape along the top of the glass.
3. Lower the window & check for even spacing from the top of the tape,
to the top of the glass.
4. Window adjustment is covered in the Bentley.

pm me as needed.

Good luck,

Gerry

I do this for a living and have to say that Dave Brown is a targa god. I send the really badly tweaked tops to him and they come back perfect.

After going thru 3m- and various sizes and other seal tapes.. This one looks the best and does its job. Just get black-rubber sealer to color it in and painters tape to make it look perfect. Do not separate the two tapes. leave as is. Do a trial run without taking off the sticky.. You have plenty of length if u mess up. Patience and a nice day to work on it, is key.

Use this - Frost King E/O 3/8 in. x 17 ft. White Ribbed EPDM Cellular Rubber Weather-Seal Tape (Amazing Fit in Front Windshield)

$4.98. No black version-but dark grey
