Hi everyone,
I just discovered this forum. I've been on Rennlist and the previous iterations of mailing lists for the last seven years or so, all the way back to Stan Hanks, but this place seems to be "where it's at" for technical topics these days. Thanks to PP for hosting it! Here's my question: I just got a 3.0 liter 1977 Turbo Carrera engine from a guy who had planned on dropping it into a 914, but never completed the project. It's relatively complete, with the dreaded thermal reactors, turbo, FI system, etc. I have absolutely no idea of mileage or condition, so as an educational thing, I thought I'd strip it down and check it out. I don't know at this point if I'll rebuild it or just take it apart and then give it to the next guy who wants a project ![]() Can anyone tell me whether this odd-duck non-intercooled motor is worth restoring and using in a project? I've got this fantasy project of rebuilding it and dropping it into a CA smog-exempt '73 roller (with upgraded brakes!), but at this point that's way out there, and I really would have to research to know if it's even viable. Comments? I know a 3.3 930 engine has more possibilities, and a NA 3.6 would be about the same HP but I do have this 930/53 already sitting in my garage looking at me.... Should I just have fun tinkering with it and then move on? I need some sage advice.... PS I also have the 4-speed gearbox. Thanks,

You can relatively easily add an intercooler to a 3.0 Turbo engine. The crank, block and pistons are quite a bit lighter than the 3.3 engine. Should be a nice combo.
I would be VERY happy to have such an engine, especially now ![]() GeorgeK Last edited by GeorgeK; 09-13-2002 at 01:52 PM.. |

Your son's car?
![]() Jeez, a 930 powered 914/6 would be more than a handful, it'd be a hairy chested beast!! Take him to DE and a few Autocrosses, Jorge... ![]()

I put a 3.0l 930 motor in my SC and I couldn't be happier. I would suggest you do a leak down now and see if it is in good cond. Then put the motor in something.

Well, if you want to unload it, let me know. I'll pick up the cost of shipping which should cover my hassels...

Just a question. Which do you think is more valuable. A motor in several boxes or an assembled motor?
Actually now that I think about. On Ebay both. ![]() What the hell. Have fun. Bobby |

i have one in a '73 targa that i turned into a speedster. light weight body and all that power runs circles around stock 3.3 turbos. SC cams and a K27 help a lot too.

Thanks for the replies-
I'm not going to unload it right now. I'll start a more targeted thread about this. What I really need to know is how easy it is to swap this engine type into a '73 or so chassis, and whether it would be "worth" doing it, compared to a 3.6, 3.2, 3.3 turbo, etc. Colin
