Post Starting Problems

I just got my 80SC back from the body shop after 4 long months. When I turn on the ignition the fuel pump continues to run before starting the car. I am also having a hard time starting the car when the engine is still warm, but has been sitting for an hour or more.I checked the archives & previous posts on these topics,& it was suggested that I need to add a check valve on the fuel distributor to stop the fuel pump from running when the switch is on & the engine is not running. It was also suggested that the fuel accumulator should be replaced to solve the warm start problem.I am looking for any other suggestions, that anyone might have. Thanks in advance, Craig

I had the same problem after re-installing my engine. I had a disconnected wire. It is a brown wire in the engine compartment on the left side, right at the back of the car. This will stop the fuel pump from running when it shouldn't be. As for the hard start I installed the check valve at the fuel pump and have had NO PROBLEMS since with this. I will also be doing my accumulator later because mine runs poorly after a warm restart. Hope this helps your problem

Shawn

Shawn, Thanks for the advice. Where did you purchase the check valve? I checked the left side of the engine compartment, & noticed that there were two brown wires in a pair that are cut in half. I wonder if the body shop cut them when they removed the rear window for paint & new seal? I will reattach them & see what happens. I am assuming they are ground wires. Thanks again, Craig

Craig yes brown wires are grounds in Porsches. The part #s for the check valve and explanation is on Rennlist under "hard starting after 10-15 minutes". John Walker walked me right through the process, check it out. Thanks again John!

Shawn,I looked up the post on renlist that you suggested. I drove the car this aft.,then let it sit for 30 minutes & it would not start. Then I followed John Walkers suggestion. I removed the air filter & lifted the sensor plate with the ignition on & it started right up. So I am having the same problem that you did. Good diagnosis on John's & your part. Isn't this board incredible? I went ahead & ordered a fuel accumulator from Pelican, just for extra insurance, & now I'm trying to track down the check valve & cap nut.I checked with pelican & called locally, all the parts houses. You would think that I was trying to find a part for the space shuttle. How did you locate these Items? Did you have to enlarge the banjo on your pump? Thanks again for the Diagnosis. Craig

I purchased the fuel accumulator from Pelican & the check valve from local P-Dealer. It fixed the problem. Total cost less than $150. A lot cheaper than my current problem, #1 cylinder 40PSI & total leakdown when checked. Oh Well I wanted to port the heads,& bump the P&C to 98MM. The car is at my wrench's & my wallet is going to be $6000 lighter after total rebuild. Good Luck !! Craig

Wink

If Pelican doesn't have a strange 911 part and you phone Porsche Cars North America they immediately transfer to Stoddard Imported Cars 1-800-342-1414
