What is the best way to get this out?
![]() I'm trying to remove the head temp sensor without damaging anything but don't have a correct tool to remove the sensor. Can anyone make a suggestion on what I can do? One of my techs had told me to just snip the harness and get a whole new sensor since I will be getting new reference and speed sensors. Any thoughts on what is the best thing to do?

How about a brake line wrench?

I went and bought a cheap deep socket and used a 1/4" grinding wheel to cut a slot all the way through one side of it.
Can't recall how many MM it was. Maybe 13mm?

![]() Just Kidding. Cut it and use 1/4 on a swivel or a wrench it's an easy one the grommet is a little finiky when putting it back" Soap it up. |

I cut a slot in an offset box wrench to get it if you don't want to cut the wire. Ken

This is what you need:
![]() So here is my story: I tried for an hour to figured out a way to take this sensor out without success. Then I read in Pelican's parts section that it is a good idea to change this sensor if it is too old. So I just gave up and I cut the wire to remove it with a regular wrench. The next day I found the flare nut wrench in a lost corner of my tool cabinet... oh well, another $95.50 to spend for the sensor... Lesson learned. The best thing to do if you don't have access to this tool, is to use a cheap box or closed wrench and cut a slot in it with a grinder.

If you don't know how old the sensor is, replacing it is the smart thing to do.
I just bought a cheap deep socket and cut a groove in it with a Dremel grinder to put the new one back in.

I believe the original 1 wire (which we all should replace) is 13mm, the replacement 2-wire is 14mm? someone should be able to confirm this...
I'm about to replace mine and i plan on snipping the wire on the old one to remove it and then slot an old 14mm socket to install the new one. I'm not at home so I can't measure the new one that is on the workbench.

Sensor Replacement
I just did this recently.
1. Get a new sensor in hand. 2. Cut the wire on the old and use a regular socket to remove. 3. Get a donor socket, probably deep well that fits the new sensor and slot it to pass the wire (just like an O2 Sensor Socket you can buy) I used a 9/16" one in my box that never got any use. Does not have to fit "perfect" you aren't going to torque this thing in much. 4. Install and enjoy. ![]()

I have the flare wrench that normally would work perfect, the problem is there is not enough clearance around between the sensor and the head. The cooling fins are getting in the way of the wrench. I'm just going to cut the damn thing and replace the sensor. I will have to modify a wrench or socket when I install the new one. Thanks for the help guys. I know I'll have a ton of this kind of stuff as I continue to disassemble and go back together.

There are two versions of the head-temp senders. The early version was 13mm and the later, two-wire version, is 14mm. A deep socket modified as shown above is the ticket.

If you don't want to make a socket or just want an excuse to buy another single use tool, search for Injection Line Flare Nut Socket. 14mm is common on some Euro diesels. Most aren't cheap, though. From $20 Ebay to $100 plus Snap-On. -J
