Black or Silver "911SC" Emblem?
A minor thing perhaps, but anyone know why some SCs have silver and some have black rear hood emblems? Peculiar to year, Euro models, or....?

I just think the color on just the SC part oxidizes more rapidly than other parts.

That is correct. Black trim became standard for the 1980 model year, so you'll only see the factory silver "911SC" emblem on some 78-79 cars.

I was wondering about the same thing. No trim parts of the car
are silver or chrome - except the script it seems. Tellingly our host only sells "911SC" scripts in black. So if mine is just faded, any tips on how to repaint it? Thanks

I used some "organic orange" paint stripper from HDepot which easily removed the old paint. Then clean it well, wipe with laquer thinner, prime, and re-paint silver or black. Simple.

Silver badges are the way to go......
The silver "911SC" badge is definitely the hot setup for '78. Black is the less expensive, higher drag coating that just slows those cars down. Silver rules.

As my badge is silver I have noticed that I pick up about 5 to 7 horse power when I drive in an easterly direction in the late afternoon.
I think the badge maybe catching randon solar flares. The stragne part is there is no HP increase when driving in a westerly direction in the mornings. Additional testing needed.

You guys are crazy. Everyone knows why Porsche did it. Its the whole chrome don't get ya home thing. The black emblem absorbs more heat from the engine bay, keeping the engine AT LEAST 10 degrees cooler. Celsius of course.

Nope, my 1980SC has silver emblem, black trim. I'm thinking of painting it black though.

Mine is black, and definitely faster. You'll be able to take a look at it when I'm in front of you.

Didn't know that, my 83 has silver emblems and I always thought they were stock... Ironically I painted them black ;-)

Lets see isn't this how it is supposed to work.
Black painted Badge = heavier than a silver one = slower than silver one Silver Badge = lighter than black painted badge = quicker No badge = lighter than silver badge = quickest ![]() ![]() ![]()

Peter Zimmermann (he's on here sometimes) wrote "The Used 911 Story".
He says that all SC's were black, despite the window/door trim and the emblems have faded. Every SC silver emblem I've seen, when you remove it, is black on the back side. Even 78's with silver trim. Rust-Oleum 9999 Satin Black is a perfect match, BTW. Last edited by tcar; 07-07-2009 at 02:56 PM.. |

That's simply not true.
My '78 with chrome trim, the SC emblem was most definitely silver from the factory, and was NOT black on the back side. Same silver color on the front as the back. |
