911 shift rod removal from tunnel
I have a 1980 Turbo Carrara, that I'm having problems getting the shifter into reverse. Going to inspect the bushing and change them. How do you remove the shift linkage rod from the tunnel?

I believe you are talking about the shift coupler, if so lift up the center rear carpet and you should see a sheet metal panel held down by 4 screws. Remove, then you should see the shift coupler. Mark it where it is and remove with a #4 allen screw as I recall. I like to use primer paint then use a sharpee.
This will disengage the rod from the shifter input shaft via the coupler. You must place back in original position of you will need to reset the coupler for proper shifting. Before you tear things apart, try this first. While the car is on just touch the 1st gear then try to put it into Reverse. If it works, then check your clutch cable adjustments to to make sure your clutch is fully disengaging. If would not hurt to check the bushings on your shifter but try to do the easy stuff first. Jim May I suggest getting a Bentley Manual, it will help allot when we don't respond quickly enough.

I just did these yesterday... wow what a difference it makes!
RickM did a great job of describing this in this thread (with nice pics too): 915 shifter--too much play-bushings? Once they are done, the pelican tech article is great for adjusting linkage: Pelican Technical Article: 911 Shifting Improvements |

IOTW you don't need to remove the rod....access panel in the back for the coupler and pull out your shifter for access to the front element.
