A couple suggestions:
1. Lay out the parts you will use on your workbench. Move any extra parts far away. You should not have any leftover parts!
2. Take pictures of various stages of the assembly. This will provide a record of what you did, as well as proof that you actually rebuilt the engine, if you sell it in the future.

Yeah. Exactly. Something to plug it up temporarily. What kind of idiot misses that on reassembly? This one.

Many years ago, I built a big turbo VW. I used a Sham-Wow to temporarily plug part of the intake tract. I forgot it was in there and when I started the monster, it made a very strange noise followed by having no power. Turns out the Sham-Wow wrapped itself around the impeller wheel and locked it up tight.

It took me a couple hours to pick all the bits out of the impeller wheel, but it didn't get past it.

Don't feel bad. This sort of thing happens.

[QUOTE=don gilbert;11867597]Car is awesome, makes me want to get on with my 77 hot rod project.

My car looked a lot like this only 7 short years ago! Btw I died my vinyl with the SEM product in case you decide to change colors (not that there’s anything wrong with brown). Mine was tan.

Yeah, I was thrilled vs the alternative of a full tear down!

Hey The Watson......where did you get your oil lines? I also have a 77 and want to do away with my copper lines. Dents and bent......not sure they work properly. Your's look great!

Thanks. Purchased complete air cooler kit. Happy with it.

But always check the Pelican options as a courtesy to our great host!

A few project updates. Installed side windows and frames. Kind of. Spent tons of time on them, cleaned, greased, replaced all weatherstripping and track felt but they are still very tough to wind and will pop out of regulators if forced. I ended up punting on that for now.

Then did a few more rewarding tasks. Installed RSR door cards, made leather pulls and openers from some antique horse bridle leather. Installed MOMO steering wheel. And some odds and ends. Waiting for some Pelican parts to finish off rear quarter windows.

R lights rewired and installed. LED for the brake lights.

Headlight upgrade should have been completed by now but I dropped and shattered the left lens. DOH!

This is the Rennline lower dash or knee guard piece installed. For a mid-year it requires trimming, but nothing too difficult.

Just lovely in every pic. The approach you took with dash looks well thought out. Glossy exterior color there is most attractive I think, Look forward to seeing it after heater controls and radio or block off plate are in.

The Watson 01-25-2023 11:06 AM

Dash fascia about ready to go in. Would have been a lot easier if I hadn’t had to match up the plaid pattern! This is also the seat fabric.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1674677067.jpg

No heater or radio. Although I may mount some vintage stopwatches if it still needs “something”.

ToySnakePMC 01-25-2023 11:18 AM

That’s going to be perfect. My brain wasn’t fully engaged last nite and didn’t take a pretty insert into account. I had thought it was just painted steel. Love the plaid with limited interruption!

The Watson 01-26-2023 09:55 AM

Thanks ToySnake. Some of these parts I bought so many years ago that I’m not sure what my plan was!

Dash complete. Next up, seats!

Looks great - love the steering wheel. Man - if someone would come up with a nice looking non-accordion hub for the 911, that would be fantastic.

Singer even uses those in there $1m builds....

Not a fan at al but what else is out there?

Seats in! Oh man, it was a challenge. All the brackets had to be reworked, roll bar mounts trimmed. And more. Test fitting 20+ times is exhausting. Super happy with the result though. Reminder the seats are from Stefan at GTS Classics from 7 years ago. Nice stuff.

Gorgeous car!

The Watson 02-03-2023 05:40 AM

Thanks Carl! A micro update. Harnesses installed. Shift knob. Drain line for center fill gas tank installed. Gas tank fuel vent line installed with rollover check valve to be mounted in fender well.

A monumental day. First drive of about 6 miles. No surprises except shift knob fell off twice! Returned home to first wash and wax ever! Never thought I’d get to this point.
