Problems after new alternator install
Hi Folks,
Need some guidance again. I just installed a new alternator in my 79sc. This involved switching from an external to internal regulator. I followed 101 pretty closely, made the changes per the Porsche tech bulletin, and believe I hooked everything back in the right place, etc. However, when I went to reconnect the battery I got arcing at the negative terminal, suggesting that something is drawing current and therefore not hooked up right (hopefully nothing got fried!). Any ideas of places to check or if I pulled the alternator out again what should I look for? Thanks as always! |
Remove the alternator take some photos of your hook up post them here.

Thanks kodioneill.
Here are two photos. Let me know if they look right.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1398430182.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1398430192.jpg |
can you pull the rubber boots back and take another photo more directly on the back? I know it's tight in there.

If useful, here is the alt part number I ordered from Pelican: 911-603-120-04

If you had the large ground wire located as shown, I would move it to another bolt away from the postive rectifier plate to prevent unintentional contact on install.

All brown can be on alt. post as there is no need to ground housing.
The large brown is connected to centerline bolt on case? Bruce |
When ever I hook up the negative lead don't you usually get a little spark as the conector touchs and battery. U may not have any issues
|
Thanks - definitely could have been contact with the plate. So I'll move the large brown ground to the post with the other browns.
It was definitely more sparks than usual, which led me to think something wasn't quite right. |
One other quick question before I button it up: with everything connected should I see 'continuity' at the + and - battery cables (no battery connected of course) indicating that the current draw is still there?
|
You will have power to the alternator, battery should be disconnected when working on it to prevent accidental short.
Here are the Tech Bulletins for the Internal Reg. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1398438955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1398438969.jpg |
Is that blue wire pinched under the regulator?
