Some more German Autofest pictures
Sorry if you've got a modem and/or little patience.
The event was great. I spoke drove up with Speeder, Tyson Schmidt, and a bunch of R Gruppe guys. Talked to Wayne, Chuck Moreland, Dave Bouzaglou (TRE Cup), Ryan (SurfLvr) and a bunch of other guys. We caravaned north early this morning. It's always refreshing to see a lot of 911's on the highway. Black Beauty, looking a great deal better than when the rock chips were being blasted off. (Thanks again, Kevin.) This is good, since the local standards for beauty were pretty high. More than one of the RS's were authentic. ![]()

The event put special emphasis this year on Speedsters.
So there were a lot. I mean, a lot. Some newer ones, even. And racing ones.

And other racing speedsters:
Here's Randy Wells' 72S: And a bunch of other (mostly early) cars. There were of course a lot more Porsches in attendance. I only took my camera out for a while, though.

Hey Jack,
In the thread that showed you repainting did I understand you correctly that your hood and front fenders are fiberglass? If so, I'm impressed with the quality. Where did you get the parts? Bobby |

Well yesterday was a whole lot of fun. But dare I say that the drive up was at least half of it ?
The Autofest was cool and there were a whole lot of cars to checkout. but the bottom line is that since it is basically "static display" only, after say, two hours you've seen everything. Don't get me wrong here, I did enjoy myself and am shooting myself in the foot today regretting NOT buying some parts I saw yesterday. It was also very enjoyable to see all the faces of my freinds, and great to catch up on what's goin on with who.. But after last year I knew this going into it so I kinda went thru a little xtra effort to help ensure that there was a nice drive up. The very beginnings of our caravan started in San Diego..hooked up with add'l cars at Seal Beach and headed north to the 118 to p/up our northern most RGruppe boyz...(and yes, Jack was there too) we ended up with 11 hot-rodded up 911's, all zooming (literally) west on the 118 to the 'fest. I believe Der Gruppmeister was well pleased to "hear" us approaching our designated parking corral. Driving wit da boyz...now that's what does it for me...

Yeah, I totally agree with John...the DRIVE was the best part of the day...by far! I went last year too, and drove up solo...but, tearing down the 118 etc at 120+....with a bunch of other early 911's....THAT was the greatest...I NEVER drive THAT fast when solo....
A great day...a great drive!!! Let's do it again soon!

One R Gruppe Auto fest perspective
I thought I'd copy this from the Early S board as Jack posted the pics of the Saturday morning R Gruppe caravan here.
A Couple quick thoughts about the Auto fest. I thought the event was nicely organized. Thank you to the promoters for a well staffed and planned event. It would be fun to see it as a one day event only so that all the cars and people might have attended on the same day. It was great to see so many R Gruppe cars but it seems the club was split with some attending on Sat and some on Sun. Maybe next year the R Gruppe can focus membership participation on one day over the other?? The parking area was prime for the Early S and R Gruppe. To make the cars a little more interesting it would be nice if the owners would attach to the inside of their window a small fact sheet. I would have enjoyed reading the specs on all the sports purpose R Gruppe cars with their upgraded engines, suspensions and brakes. A big thank you to John Risvold and Kurt Zimmerman from R Gruppe. These two guys coordinated the Saturday So Cal R Gruppe caravan. John provided detailed maps of the event, 3 hand held radios and a radar detector for the spirited run to the event. John those were some AAA trip tic quality maps! About 11 cars enjoyed dogging Roger (if you chase its a race) Grago. Cris super job on the latest R Gruppe News. When I was walking around with this mini book I was asked a couple times where others could pick up a copy. The content is exactly on target, fun reading. I heard rumor of an R Gruppe meet in October with another run in the LA hills. Hope to see you all there. mg Last edited by ted; 09-16-2002 at 08:52 AM.. |

Yes, the drive up was the highlight. It was the first time I have had the pleasure of being in a "wilding pack" of flat-sixes, these are such amazing cars and they love to run together fast, must be something in their bloodlines.
My SC at 5000rpm in 5th gear, ~125mph, right in the middle of the pack. What a blast. The drive back solo was sort of depressing after that togetherness.

I'll confirm that speeds for the Saturday morning wolfpack did at one point reach 137 mph, where the rev limiter interjected its own opinion, and my acceleration stopped.
Tyson kept going. (Of course, for any lurking CHP officers, this was done on the part of the route that consisted of a private, closed course with professional drivers. Do not attempt.)

Jack !!!!
I am surprised....tisk..tisk... 137 ?!?!?!? only?? I didn't know you had a rev limiter on Black Beauty...I would have never guessed. Now accd'g to my mechanic, he's had my puny 911 to 155 and sez there's just a tad left, although I have not had the huevos to try it myself.... So by my estimate Black Beauty's potential....is yet to be fully explored!!!

Actually, John, my car is deliberately geared for a low top speed, in order to maintain very short rpm gaps between the gears. With custom gear sets for 2,4 and 5, my 8:31 tranny is geared lower than a 7:31 box. On a track, it allows me to keep the car right at the peak of its torque curve. That, and my car's low weight, allows it to pull both from 0-60 and from 60-140 faster than a 996.
An example. The same example in AVI fomat.
