What board for door panels?

I am in the process of constructing a flat door panel for my 1973 911 T and was wondering what board I should use? It looks like my old board(or should I say cardboard) is around 1/8" thick. Where can I buy a sheet of appropriate board? Also, what is this board called?

I already ordered new black leather from pelican to cover the new panels...

Bill

You can buy it at Home Depot. My father used to call it 'Masonite'.
Good luck.

And if you're fanatical about weight, the stuff to use is the corrugated plastic, like the stuff used in US Mail bins.

Original Fit Interiors uses/used Luan plywood. If you go with any material that absorbs moisture, I suggest applying a coat or two of polyurethane.

Bill, you might also look into abs sheet mtl for the backing. Not to expensive, easy to cut and drill, takes glue well and is waterproof and not to heavy. Can be found at most plastic supply houses.

Bill,

I saw some plastic pegboard material at Lowe's a while back. Perhaps a bit thicker than the Masonite used by the factory ... but it won't absorb moisture! How well it would hold up to the 140°F++ interior temps in the summertime is anybody's guess.

I agree with Jack....the corregated plastic is the way to go.
It's stiff...light...plastic (sheds water)..and comes in white and black.
I just completed my new door panels...with some naugahide and contact cement.
They look very good....and I cut them out using big scissors.

Thanks guys. I'll keep you posted on my progress. I plan on buying a sheet of something this weekend.

I just received some Por 15, so I may give my trunk a coat this weekend before I tackle the door panels.

Wow...cool tip. I'd never had thought of that. Thanks Jack! Anyother tips when attaching the 'new skin' to the door? Still use the stock clips or have you any better ideas?

Cheers
Mark
