Car wont start after swapping in a Steve Wong chip (note - not blaming Steve)

Hi guys - well with great excitement I put in my Steve Wong chip into my '74 with a 3.2 in her. Ordered the right pin # chip for my no cat car, fit perfectly. Popped everything back together and while she cranks she won't start.

Popped the old chip back in - after realizing that the PO managed to badly bend one of the pins (grrr) and she starts.

As noted in the title to be fair to Steve - this has nothing directly to do with Steve as I bought the chip second hand.

Help! Any ideas?

john walker's workshop 05-05-2014 10:13 AM

backwards? missed a pin?

tdskip 05-05-2014 10:17 AM

Hi John - I am sure I didn't miss a pin, possible I put it backwards but I assembled it with the notch facing the same way as the chip I removed. Let me double check.

EDIT - notch was correctly oriented.

It might be a fried Wong chip from a static charge. If it runs with the stock chip and not the Wong Chip.

Hi - thanks for the note. I am getting fuel pump on if that matters.

It does seem that it may be the chip as my stock chip works and install orientation is the same. Time to ping the Pelican I bought Steve Wong chip from I guess.

Since you bought the chip second hand, I assume you did not get all the instructions? If you did, did you check that if your DME was one of the early ones and did the update?

Hi Steve, thanks for the help. There were not instructions with the chip so I did not know to check this. I will check tomorrow, fingers corssed.

Thanks again.

SW Chip

I remember having to solder a jumper on the dme board.

tdskip 05-06-2014 02:24 PM

Hi guys - just to close this out I had the jumper moved per Steve's coaching and she starts now.

I appreciate everyone's help here, this forum is fantastic.

I'd especially like to thank Steve Wong for helping even when this wasn't in any way his issue/concern, and Scooter (Pelican member here) whom I bought the chip from and jumped in to help. Thank you both.

That's great news. When I bought my SW chip, I found that I was not up to the challenge of removing the old soldered in chip, so I sent the whole thing to Steve and had him install it. I was worried about my precious Motronics unit traveling across the country a couple of times, but everything turned out OK in the end.

I paid to have mine done as well, seemed like a bad situation to learn how to solder circuit boards.

BTW - hope your Chump Car build goes well, the series is huge fun.

It's going sloooooooooowly. An hour here, two hours there, 6 hours a day on the weekends. Since the Supra is a new car for me, everything is a "first time" and I have to figure things out before jumping in with a wrench and a hammer. I'm getting things done, but the list is long. I had hoped to have it done by August, but that's not looking so good.

Send some pictures along when you get a chance. We ran a XJ12 (yeah, really) at Laguna Seca. Huge fun.

I've found Steve to be very professional in my dealings with him. Completely top-notch as he takes time to speak with you,..as far as you want to go in the discussion.

Best!

Doyle

I'll probably start a build thread in the OT, since it's a Toyota. :)

I envy you being able to run a Laguna Seca, way too far away for me. But we have Rd Atlanta, Sebring, and VIR.................

And this is why Steve Wong is tops in my book. Customer service to the SECOND customer of the chip!

There are really very few companies out there that have this level of customer service.

livi 05-08-2014 06:31 AM

Yes, indeed. Steve sent me a chip along with instructions all the way to Sweden. Very nice fellow and superb service.

georgew123 05-09-2014 07:54 PM

Just fixed exact same problem as OP... used Chip (911Chip) and no start after install. Just moved the jumper wire and started up smooth. Let it warm up fully in the morning, verify idle adjustment (if needed). Thanks to Pelican for this great board and the amazing people who get us to the answers we need to keep these cars as much DIY as possible!

Great! Hope this thread helped.

Just curious Markus... Did it make your Euro car, with good fuel, go faster?
