Head stud length
From my '78 SC. How much do you think is left in the crankcase for me to get hold of and remove? I'm betting not much.

Broken head stud........
Dave,
The cylinder head studs are usually about 135 mm out when correctly installed. Based from the pictures you have provided, the break occurred right at the base. The welding of an extension for extraction is some what difficult at this point. But it could be done if you know someone with the expertise and experience. There is a few mm left exposed on the broken dial at head stud according to my calculation. Do not dispair, removal of these notorious head studs have been done successfully in the past. Start the tear down and find out the remnant of the said head stud. Some were easy to remove and others could be very stubborn. Search for 'EDM' welding method. Keep us posted. Tony |

Thanks Tony. I'm going to drop the engine this weekend. I'll let you know what's sticking out of the case if anything.

about an inch and a 1/4. the way i do it is to remove pistons and cylinders and all the studs and all the nuts for the main through-bolts in an area where i can swing a pair of vise-grips in the widest arc. get a good grip on the stub and fire up the oxy/acet torch and heat the case adjacent to the threads. with light pressure on the v/grips, heat until you feel the stud move. carefully move the v/grips as far as you can without reclamping and then back and forth until the stud is pretty loose. reheat if needed. when it's still hot and free, use smaller v/grips and turn it out. the less reclamping the better or the stub gets chewed up and ungrippable. be careful you don't scar the cylinder base surface on the case in the process.

John, You think there's still an inch and a quarter sticking out of the case? That would be great! I was assuming there'd be some minimal amount, a few mm at best.

no, that's the total that broke off. probably 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch sticking out. not much to work with, but they come out with my method if you'r careful and have enough heat. you may get lucky and find it's already loose.

Oh, I see. I'll be sure to fill up my tanks then! And cross my fingers the rest of the week.
