How can I tell if my ball joints are the early or late style? Can you provide details on when the transition occurred?

If you are thinking of the 911/914 change back in 1972, then a quick visual inspection should tell you. The early ball joint used a split bottom strut with a nut and bolt to pinch the pin to the ball joint into the strut; if you can see the head of a bolt then this is the one. The later ball joint was fastened with a wedge pin, and you will only see the nut holding it in place.
