Looking at buying a 1976 mag case 915/44 wondering if it will work behind my 3.2 L out of my 84 thanks

I think you have to notch the case so the fly wheel position sensor can read the teeth on the flywheel. Also I think the speedo hook up is different and the 3.2 computer uses signals from the speedo...try searching too I think the definitive answer has been posted several times.

915/44 uses the electronic speedo same as the later 915s.
You can compare the gear ratios for the various 915 versions here 915 TRANSAXLE SPECIFICATIONS-GBOX Transmission

As you can see from the info stolen from the site noted above, the 915/44 and the gearbox originally mated to the 3.2 are pretty much identical with the exception of 5th gear.

915/44

911, 911S (USA), Carrera 1976
5-speed synchronized transaxle
Manufactured by Porsche (ZF)
Plate-type limited-slip differential available
Rod shift
Single-plate clutch
Gear ratios:
1st gear: 3.18 (11/35)
2nd gear: 1.83 (18/33)
3rd gear: 1.26 (23/29)
4th gear: 1.00 (26/26)
5th gear: 0.82 (28/23)
Ring and pinion: 3.88 (8:31)

915/68

911 Carrera 3.2 (USA/Japan) 1984-86
5-speed synchronized transaxle
Manufactured by Porsche (ZF)
Plate-type limited-slip differential available
Rod shift
Single-plate clutch
Gear ratios:
1st gear: 3.18 (11/35)
2nd gear: 1.83 (18/33)
3rd gear: 1.26 (23/29)
4th gear: 1.00 (26/26)
5th gear: 0.79 (38/30)
Ring and pinion: 3.88 (8:31)

Physically, it will work but I think there are some functional differences between the two boxes potentially involving the lack of a clutch helper spring and maybe the output flanges but that is just guessing.
