(I don't want to use the sawzall... That's not the kind of short shifter I want....)

There are two ways:
1: Use the open end of a wrench and hit up using a mallet at the base. If your VERY lucky it will come off.

If that doesn't work, and it probably won't due to age, you can try again with heat. I used a heat gun and mine still did not budge.

Failing all else you can try method two: CAREFULLY use a dremel to cut into the plastic at the base. You need to go extra slow here as you can mar the metal handle underneath.

Both methods will result in the destruction of your old shiftknob. If you want to keep it for "originality", I recommend you find a used handle with out a shiftknob attached and use that one.

I have sentimental value in my 911 and there are very few bits I let go, short of disposable parts. I am on the waiting list via a friend, for another stock 915 shifter for my 911, so I can install one of my knobs. I don't want to damage the original knob.

Technically, yes. We'd have to work via PM a bit, since it would be more of a custom order thru Pelican, but it's not a problem.

Shift knobs for the 1st and 2nd gen Wevo shifter has now been added to the PP catalog. The part numbers were not exactly supposed to go live right now, as I have a limited supply of the bushings, but it is. :) I have 8-9 silver (Al) bushings and 1-2 black bushings at the moment. It will be a few weeks at best before I can have more black anodized bushings available. I apologize for this.

Okay, it's been a while since the last update....

I have prototyped two new bushings. One will allow for a leather shift boot to be attached and the other will be for the 964, 93, 996, 997, Boxster..... It will have the ability to have the shift boot attach to it as well.

This is being produced for the 924, 944, 968. Realistically, I can make it for just about any model Porsche and other makes.

OP. I'm looking to buy this for my 964. I'm a total noobie. Can this work? If so, what shifter and which knob can I work with? Are there options for a darker wood knob?

I'm looking at Carbone and their system is too expensive and the only option I can find so far.

I have tried to remove my stock knob to be able to remove the shift boot, and get to the sifter mechanism. I have a large wrench that is a nice tight fit, and I taped up the edges of the metal open end wrench. I had a friend hold the shift lever shaft, and I whacked the wrench about as had as i could, and all I did was make noise. I suspect I will have to destroy my current knob to get it off.

I am just not ready to do that as yet.

I did it and it stings while you’re doing it.

But I couldn’t wait and find a replacement shifter...

Looks good now so the stinging didn’t last long.

Bartosz from Poland is a veri nice dude. He made me one of my first 917-styled knobs, original small in diameter, 26 layers of mahagony, open bushing.
