DME relays

Is there a simple way to check a DME relay to see if it operates correctly?

If the car starts & runs your relay should be fine.

For what it's worth, I bench tested one and SWORE it was in working condition. The problem with my no start turned out to be the DME relay.

Open it up, if it looks like your 6 year old could have done a better job with the solder buy a German made relay. I 've gone thru several crappy ones that last a few months....

Everyone should have a spare (or two) in their glove box. It's just one of those things.

I came across a fellow with a stalled '86 Carrera today that said it was running just fine, then suddenly quit. I carry a spare DME relay, but is there any easy way to swap them out on the roadside? He had power seats and I could barely get my arm in the space. We had to give up and call AAA for a flatbed tow.

How are folks swapping them out with the driver's seat in place? Is there any trick?

I keep a 10MM socket in my car with the extra DME (replaced it when I got the car and kept the old one that still worked). I also keep a flat screw driver and the original CHIP, just in case. With the seat fully back, it is fairly simple to get the DME relay and computer out.

Yes. If your car does not run and you suspect the DME; bypass the DME by running a wire from the fuel pump fuse (#6) to a powered fuse (#5 or 7) . The fuel pump should run. and you should be able to start the car. If it starts and runs when jumpered, the DME is likely bad.
