WOW - just completed some major upgrades in just 3 weeks!
I have been auto crossing my 84 911 Targa for about 3 years and it was time to do a suspension refresh. Everything was pretty much original - and the car was pretty high.
A friend and I embarked on a fast track project to get a lot of updates done in a very short time (between autox events with Metro NY PCA). Fortunately Hershey fell right in the middle of the schedule so we got some cool parts for cheap. I also appreciate all of the assistance and info on this forum that helped get us through some tough parts of the process! We did about 80% of the work - and had Caste Systems Performance in Norwood, NJ finish the job - as we wanted the car ready for Autox and needed help with some welding. James (the owner) did a great job for a great price. He did the exhaust, adjusted the height, installed the brake stuff, turbo tie rods, and Trailing Arm bushings. Here is the total list: Rennline Pedal Set including adjustable accelerator Rennline Tie Down Set Rennline 3 point Strut Brace Weltmeister Sway Bars Rear Tarrett Sway Bars Front WEVO RARB sway bar mounts 22mm Front & 28 mm Rear Torsion Bar upgrade Rebel Racing Front Bushing Set with Spherical Washers Turbo Tie Rods Weltmeister Bump Steer kit New Ball Joints Targa Braces Sway-A-Way Adjustable Rear Spring Plate Powerflex Trailing Arm Bushing Set Stainless Steel Brake Lines New brake pads FabSpeed Pre Muffler ($125 at Hershey!) Borla 1 in 4 out Muffler ($100 at Hershey!) SOUNDS AWESOME. Lowered Car Aligned Car Only got to drive it for the first time last night in the rain. #1 the exhaust sounds fantastic. It rumbles and screams at high RPMs. Reminds me a lot of an american muscle car - which is a whole new experience for me. So far the handling is awesome. I live in Brooklyn NY so there are a lot of bumps and while the handling is now super tight it is not jarring at all. I do now have to be careful on Speed Bumps and Curbs but got the Rennline Tie Downs to take some of the scrapes. The project took about 50 hours of my friend and my time and 15 hours from our mechanic. Not sure of total cost yet - but the suspension components were all 30 years old and it was time. More than happy to provide any info about choices..... and will let you know how autox goes. ![]()

One thing to note for future reference - and this is my opinion - The rear trailing arm moves in two axis, so putting in the super stiff power flex bushings means when the trailing arm is trying to move in or out or up at an angle it is pushing against the stiff new bushing. This adds spring rate to the rear that is hard to tune for and not linear and predictable/easy to drive. Monoballs or stock soft rubber is probably the best option for the rear trailing arm pivots.
Now its time for a SW chip, light weight interior and FG bumpers :-) These 3.2 cars are super fun aren't they! I bet its going to be fun to drive! It will be interesting to see if your AutoX relative finishes or times improve?

So the AutoX results are in.
1) The car actually drives and sounds like a Race Car. It is running very flat with limited body roll. It feels awesome and I feel like I can't push myself hard enough to take full advantage of the upgrades. 2) There are two people that have been consistently beating me by about 1 to 2 seconds. I was able to beat them with the new setup by 1 to 2 seconds - so I basically seem to have picked up about 3 seconds. My co-driver also saw similar results. 3) Definitely need to tune the sway bars a bit. Will try that over next few months.
