2nd gear synchro

I believe I am having a 2nd gear synchromesh issue/failure. Gear will grind upon downshifting (even at lower RPMs/Speeds) and will occasionally pop out of 2nd gear if you don't really make sure you have pulled it completely into 2nd. Any ideas of cost to repair?

I am looking at doing a new clutch and upgrading the Intermediate Shaft Bearing at the same time to alleviate any potential future RMS issues. The local dealer gave a rough quote of 9,600 for rebuild and over 12K for total trans replacement which seems way high.

Shame, I have no referral for a quality mechanic in that area. Contact the Tech Chairman for your local Porsche Club of America region, they usually keep a list of mechanics who do good work at fair (note, I didn't say reasonable) prices.

Thanks anyway Pete - I appreciate the effort. I think I've got a good local tech guy that comes through a very reputable source.

Stay away from the Dealer, a good independent is where you want to go. My 2nd gear went and it needed machine work and WEVO upgrades on my 83, 915 trans.

Call Robert at Lufteknic. 2nd gear popout is common on the 996. He can repair it and go through it at the same time. Should cost about half what the dealer quoted.

If he doesn't own a 50 ton press or has never done a G96 before buyer beware. It is not like any other gearbox Porsche ever used. Don't let someone learn on your gearbox.
