Which 911 is the best?

Which 911 is the best? Is it the original 901/911 from 1963, the A series? Is it the B, C or D series of the 60s to 1971? Is it the H series of the 1980s? Were there H series of the 1970s? What say you? So that everyone is clear, the 996, 997 and 991 don't count as they are water cooled.

In my opinion, the impact bumper model (1974-1989) is the best 911 because it was probably the most successful era of the air-cooled 911 The water-cooled 911's don't really have the charm of the air-cooled models, but don't get me wrong, they're pretty nice as well

I tend to agree. It was as if though Porsche had developed the 911 to perfection. Though the magnesium engines weren't all good during the 70s.

Whichever 911 series you happen to like the best....air-cooled or water-cooled.

The 1974-77 S Targa was the best 911. In guards red. With sporto. So awesome.

I have drive a few Porsche 911s and also had a nice Cayman and the connections among them are obvious. The early 911 A series are the most visceral and special that I have driven.

The best 911 is the one I own .... All others are nice, but just don't seem to blow my whistle like the one in my garage, or as in my case, the one in my mechanics shop getting the engine fully rebuilt and reducing the thickness of my wallet at warp speed !!! The 911 I lust after really isn't a 911, but a 912 targa with sportmatic

Happy memorial day to all

I have to say that the best 911 of the modern era is when Porsche returned to the rag top and brought back the Cabriolet in 1983 - the first convertible Porsche since the 356. The performance and feel of a water cooled 911 with the open air driving sensation. This car has save me thousands in therapy sessions -

The best 911 is the one Porsche never made because it captures the best of all generations: A long hood with a 3.6 in it. Many here have built it, and I think it is the ultimate hot rod. There is a commercial version of it made by Singer.

What appeals to many people is the combination of retro lines or details with modern engines and suspensions. Porsche caught up with that in the new 997 Targa that has the retro looking Targa bar, but that is not air cooled.

+1 for the 83 cab of course and of course owning a RoW just sweetens the ride.

The best 911 is the one in your garage. You can look at its lines, touch its curves, and drive its wheels off. All other porsches are meaningless...

Exactly - best for what?

Best for the track? Or best for the street? Two completely different cars.

Best to drive to work? Or best as a weekend car? Again, completely different cars.

Best for grocery shopping? Best for taking the kids to daycare?

Best for dropping off your nephew at high school? Or best for letting your nephew drive to prom?

Best looking sitting in the garage? Or best at a concourse?

Best for camping? Or best for a weekend for two in the south of France?

Best car to take to Launa Seca historic races and being mistook for a racer and let into the pits?

Which is it?
