Cross post from Rennlist - No answer there --
My sweet bride came in to me at work this morning and sheepishly told me that she'd accidently broken the rear view mirror in my '87 Coupe. Went to find that the stem has broken at the windshield mount, so had to order new one. Is there any trick to re-mounting to original base that I should know about?

On my '82 I had to use a rawhide mallet and a screwdriver to remove my rear view mirror from the bracket. Just a little light tapping should remove it.

Thanks for the reply -- on tne '87 there is an opening at the bottom of the bracket with some sort of mechanism (shiny metal) that I assume is some sort of release for the post that the mirror goes on. Haven't gotten into it yet as work is keeping me busy, but will look further this weekend. Hoping that I won't have to R & R the mounting bracket too.
