Its a nice try, but its not funny because its very untrue.

There are SOME real 944 enthusiasts. But, the vast majority these days are people who buy the car because its a "Porch" and because you can buy one for $3500. One fender bender, busted timing belt, and the car is in the scrapheap.

Which is really the main difference between 911s and 924/944s. 911s never die - people will go through great pain and expense to keep them on the road. There is a REASON for that.

80% of 924/944s on the road are one major repair or minor accident away from the junkheap. Hardly anyone would ever spend any significant money restoring or resurrecting a 924/944. And, there is a REASON for that, too.

And that pretty much puts the difference between the 924/944 and the 911 in a nutshell.

I don't have a problem with those cars, heck, I owned a 944 myself. But to compare a 924/944 to a 911 in the pecking order of automotive greatness is just folly. They are just not in the same league.

i'm completely aware the differences between the 2 models, please don't think I don't know everything you just accurately stated
i'm hoping i'll be able to "educate" these guys in time since i'm sure a handfull of them will be able to answer some questions i'll have with the 924s i'm picking up.
i thought the 928 part was VERY funny though......

"When driving another car, 911 owners get confused and suspect vehicle malfunction if the ass end of their car doesn’t slide out behind them in a curve. All other Porsche owners claim to loathe 911’s and their owner’s haughty attitudes, but secretly hope to own a 911 themselves."

sounds about right

Minor truths, some over exagerations and outright horse puckey....

Only funny if you are water pumper driver, which I isn't....most of those 924/944 dorks are snow boarders so consider the source....

Snow boarders need to learn that the MIDDLE of the slope is for SLIDING....NOT hanging out and kvetching about skiiers.....

I feel better NOW.....

Well, I'm the author so I guess I'll comment.

Of course it isn't 100% true - My first line made reference to it being a satire - I was poking fun at Porsche owners in general and "The great Air-cooled/Water-cooled" divide that exists. Sorry if you didn't find it funny - that is all it was intended to be, though there are seeds of truth in every one to a certain extent.

I'm a Porsche enthusiast - all makes, all models, being a network engineer by day and a part time porsche wrench at night, I've had the opportunity to own several different models. I've owned just about every model except a 356 or a 911 at some point in the last 10 years - I just sold my 968 and my 914 - I am saving up for a factory 85 930S - yes, they did make them in 85, 44 of them to be exact - the shop I work at is currently restoring 2 of them.

I like the 944's because it is a fun car to drive. Will ever be worth anything - probably not - certainly nowhere near what I've put in it - but to me it doesn't matter

I'll agree with you on one point - there are a lot of cheap/bad ones out there - usually bought by people who can afford the car, but can't afford, or won't bother to maintain them - the rest of us (admittedly a dwindling number) drive them and enjoy maintaining them - no different than a 911 owner.

Bell - you are more than welcome and we would be happy to help with 924 issues

FWIW, I don't snowboard or surf either

(read my signature - it holds true no matter what model you drive)

Asbestos suit on

Let the flaming begin

I thought it was quite funny. We all look at the cars we own or want to own as the cars everyone should want.

The long hood guys know that everyone really wants an early 911.

The Targa guys know that the coupe guys are totally jealous.

The Motronic guys can’t believe anyone would want MFI or CSI.

The later guys know that everyone secretly wants a 3.6 in their car.

And the SC guys, well, we all know you can’t beat an SC don’t we?

AFJuvat......i know, it's all in fun. i don't think anyone took it personally, opinions vary and thats why america is the ONLY place to be in my opinion
i'm diving into the water cooled 924s because i'm getting a nice example (needs paint though) for cheap from a friend.

i think the water cooled vs. air cooled debate is fun to poke at, and thought the 911 guys would get a kick out of your post (which was a fun read if i may say so)

later

I thought it was pretyy close to being accurate. There's always exceptions to every group, but it made me chuckle.
BTW, what does your signature mean?

That is really well done. It was a great chuckle early in the morning. I did see one thing in common between all models, we all spend WAY too much $$$ on them, also, no matter what model we own, we all secretly desire another.

Hahahaha that was funny

I'm a 911 owner and if you wake me up in the middle of the night and ask me what my car's chassis number is I'll be able to answer So should I really be driving a 356?

Here are the updates, thought I would share them here too.

Boxster – “It’s the Trendy thing to do” This person knows little about cars and less about Porsches. A frequent denizen of the shop to troubleshoot a strange electrical/headlight problem: “Other cars that kind of look like mine flash their lights at me; I’m positive my lights were turned off, does this car have daytime running lights?” Is vaguely aware that Porsche actually made cars before 1997, but could not identify them by sight. Bemoans the lack of a cupholder, as it is really hard to shift while holding that grande double decaf mocha latte from Starbucks.

996 – “I shoulda kept my SC!” Bought by 911 owners who missed out on the 993 because they were too busy modifying their 1979 to look like an 93 964 turbo. Feels totally lost when looking at the engine, as there is little there that is immediately recognizable “Where’s the fan damnit!” Very disconcerted at the presence of a **gasp** coolant tank, privately worries that the guys at the PCA meeting will tease him about it. In a desperate effort to return to familiar sights/smells, intentionally spills oil on hot exhaust. Debates the pros/cons of removing the current air vent and putting a whale tail on it.

Cayenne – "What the hell were they thinking?!" Every SUV needs a 4.5 liter twin turbo engine and cupholders for Juniors Hi-C juice-box in the back seat. Looks like what you would get if a 911 mated with a Hyundai Santa Fe. Expected to be one of the best designed Porsches ever, since they obviously moved the engineers that USED to work on the LeMans cars to the project. This is the one area where airhead and wethead can generally agree:
“It ain’t a Porsche….”

Anyone who read that and didn't see a bit of humor and truth in what AF wrote needs to pull their head out of their ass and learn to laugh at themselves. Great stuff!
