Audio for a 78 SC

I'd like to add some rear speakers to my 78 SC. I've seen some speakers mounted in the rear deck and even heard of others putting speakers in the rear seat side panels. After searching the forum I didn't find what I was looking for if I missed something please feel free to point it out. Your help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Start by posting a photo of your rear deck, is there anything there now?

I just took the factory speakers out of my car, not sure what to do with them now.

I've never heard them play, too much wind noise on my Targa and no fader.

Few ideas here you go:

Speakers for your Porsche 911 or 912
Speaker Enclosure Rear Deck - Moch 1
WANTED: Rear speaker box

I used this style rear enclosure with sub-woofers under each front seat with great results in a 1975 911 I once owned.

My rear deck is completely stock. Not any speaker holes cut out.

Thank you for the ideas! The Moch 1 looks feasible.

You might want to consider upgrading your front door speakers before adding rear speakers. I no longer use my rear deck speakers, as they detracted from the focus/imaging provided by my upgraded door speakers -- if you are searching for more bass, an underseat subwoofer may get u there too.

My 1977 is stock in that regard, the perforations in the rear deck (not a grille or hole) made the speakers almost invisible (and maybe a little inaudible too).

A warning on upgrading the door speakers which I think is great advice (by darrin), if you have power windows there might be a metal box which hangs down into the drivers side cavity. This can limit speaker election along with just a shallow space to work with in the first place.

Below; my 1977 after cleaning it up to lighten it.

My 79 SC Targa has rear deck speakers. It has RS door cards, so no front speakers.

I mostly listen to NPR during commutes, and with the roof on or off it is fully sufficient. If you wanted high fidelity audio, you should probably consider front speakers of some kind.

If you'd like some pictures of the rear deck, let me know and I can post.

this should be your first step. think about a concert - where are the speakers, in front of or behind you?

should not be a problem. i have an 83 with power windows and i could fit any 6.5" i wanted in the door without problems.

if you want some info on installation and what you may run into check out my audio thread.

new audio install

Thank you all for the advice everyone!

I think my best option now after reading everyone's comments would be to replace the front door speakers and abandon the rear speaker idea. There are some old 6.5's in the front doors now. But, they are on their last legs. I'll pull one out, look for the black box inside the panel since I have power windows, and make a good measurement to see what speakers will fit. I hope there are some decent offerings out there.

I've already upgraded the stereo unit with a Kenwood Excelon model so maybe some Kenwood 6.5's will work.....

nineball,

Nice link!

5.25 inch stock, replaced with 2-way Boston Acoustics 5.25 inch coaxial 2-ways require face out spacers on mine.
